    Default Neil Walker called up

Looks like Pearce may be going on the DL and Neil Walker is taking his roster spot. No links anywhere yet, but it's the main topic of discussion on 93.7 The Fan right now.

So Steve Pearce may be Waly Pipped eh.

I doubt Walker comes up to sit the bench and stunt potential growth (although that's what they're doing to Clement anyway, idiots) so I wonder how this shakes out with the lineup.

Is Aki heading back to the land of the Iron Chefs?

Its about time. Neil gets a chance to show the hometown folks if he has really turned the corner or if his success in Indy this season has been a mirage. This is his last, best chance before Alvarez and Tabata crowd the lineup.

I really hope they play him at second rather than first.. He could be the second baseman of the future. I wanna see if this guy can turn a double play. There have been glowing reports of his fielding at 2B in Indy.

As I said before Pearce got hurt, I'd have IR'd Aki and played Walker at 2B for two weeks to see if his hot start is anything more than what I suspect it is - a mirage that belies his history of sub-par minor league hitting. Now that Pearce is out, this is less attractive to me. I don't know that "fixing" Clement at the ML level will work if they throw him out there every day rather than protect him while he works on his swing. Walker can play some first when they want to sit Clement and some 2B when they want to rest Aki. At the end of the day, if he hits, he will play almost every day. If he hits and fields 2B well, he could play himself into a starting job longer term. While I am skeptical, I am hoping it works out that way.

Walker is/has been being groomed as a utility guy. With the bizarre idea of moving a poor defensive player like Delwyn Young to 3B in place of LaRoche and his sore back, maybe we'll see some of Walker at 3B as well with Laroche out?

Pearce getting injured was about the only way Walker was getting called up this soon IMO outside of someone else in the IF going on the DL.

here's to wishing Walker some luck and hoping he's starting to "figure it out". We could use it

    Dejan has it up now....

"Pearce to DL, Walker up Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:26 Written by Dejan Kovacevic CINCINNATI – The Pirates have placed first baseman Steve Pearce on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle and recalled infielder/outfielder Neil Walker.

Pearce’s ankle was twisted while making a throw in the second inning Monday night.

Walker, 24, had been one of Class AAA Indianapolis’ top performers with a .321 average, six home runs and 26 RBIs."

I'll be interested to see if Walker starts tonight.

If Laroche is still nursing the bad back, then it makes the most sense to have Walker play 3B. Walk and Brown were talking about how Russell wants to get Delwyn's bat into the lineup, play him in RF, put Jones at 1B. Against a righty like Leake, let's get all them lefties in the lineup

Tonight will see Walker at third, Jones in right, Clement at first, I'm guessing. But DY in right and Jones at first might be just as likely...

All I can tell you for sure about tonight's lineup is that Ryan Church will be in it. Can't live without that .258 OBP.

Argggh. Putting this 31 yr old journeyman in the lineup every night is taking away playing time from guys that need to be evaluated. If the guy was tearing the cover off the ball then maybe... but a mediocre journeyman should not be interfering with the evaluation of Milledge in particular and (indirectly) Clement. Soon, Church could be stealing playing time from Walker too - but I hope not.

Walker equals Wehner of old. Wehner is one of my favorite all time players. Walker has a chance to look better, because the team is not performing all that well.

I tried to cheer Iwamura, but it's time to move on. I wish him the best.

BTW, Delwyn's starting to heat up. I hope Walker's play doesn't keep him out of the line up. We could use both players, on a tear.

Pearce contributed while he was here. I hope he comes back and holds a spot as well.

All my wishing costs someone a job. Iwamura, obviously, perhaps Crosby...........nothing against Crosby. Our bench guys are light years ahead of recent past subs.

Crosby is a lock to stay on the roster. There is no one else that can possibly play SS to spell Cedeno.

I had to laugh when I read it to keep from going insane.
