OUCH Playing with a Torn Groin

also another story on Ray Shero & the Upcoming FA period

Penguins general manager Ray Shero, who hadn't really given a wide-ranging interview since the team lost in the second round to Montreal, granted one today. He offered a lot of news and insight.

Below are the highlights. A more detailed account will appear in the Saturday Post-Gazette.

*Defenseman Brooks Orpik is probably facing surgery for an unspecified injury in his abdominal area. He played through the injury after about mid-season. Top-line winger Chris Kunitz was playing for some time with a torn groin and might be able to avoid surgery. Shero said all returning players should be healthy for the start of the 2010-11 season.

*Defenseman Sergei Gonchar is Shero's top priority among potential free agents, although Shero indicated it could be a tight salary cap squeeze to retain him.

*Defenseman Sergei Gonchar is Shero's top priority among potential free agents, although Shero indicated it could be a tight salary cap squeeze to retain him.

*The Penguins and winger Ruslan Fedotenko have pretty much mutually decided to part ways after his disappointing season. "I think [Fedotenko] will probably will look elsewhere," Shero said.

*Jay McKee is likely to look around to see if he can find a team where he can have a higher profile than the seventh or eighth defenseman spot he held with the Penguins, although Shero is not ruling out re-signing him.

*Shero is puzzled as to why Alexei Ponikarovsky did not work out as Evgeni Malkin's winger after Shero acquired Ponikarovsky from Toronto in early March. Somewhat surprisingly, Shero still believes in Ponikarovsky and might try to re-sign him. "Whether it's with us or somebody else, he'll bounce back," Shero said.

*Winger Matt Cooke is a priority, but Shero said that at 32 and coming off a strong season, Cooke will have to decide between staying where he knows he is comfortable and effective or pursuing a big contract for family security.

*Winger Bill Guerin is itching to continue playing, despite turning 40 in November, but Shero isn't committed to bringing him back. "We just have to sort things out and see what the fit is," Shero said.

*Shero isn't dismissing the fatigue factor in the Penguins' inconsistent season and second-round exit from the playoffs, but he also has a theory: The team didn't get a dominant performance from one or two players to enable it to close out the Canadiens. He cited these players from the previous five series as examples -- goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in the first round of 2009 against Philadelphia, center Sidney Crosby in the next round against Washington, Malkin in the Eastern Conference final against Carolina, and Fleury and center Jordan Staal in the final against Detroit. Crosby tore through Ottawa in the first round this year with 14 points. "In the second round, we didn't really find it one player to step up," Shero said. "We've got to just bounce back."

I think some folks are going to be upset with the sentence about Poni. If he can get him cheap for like 2 years might it be worth it? It is not like he is a Hossa type rental player. It was the first time he had to slip into a new system at the end of the year. No excuse I felt like he could have done a lot more for us but maybe it could still work out and if not maybe he is a tradable commodity. If he can do 30 goals for us that would be a huge help for our centers.

Those players are locked up for next season, and Shero does not expect changes among the assistants --[HIGH-LIGHT] "I'm very happy with our coaching staff,"[/HIGH-LIGHT] he said -- but there could be some roster turnover with eight players eligible for unrestricted free agency if they are not re-signed by July 1.

I absolutely HATE This Love Shero has for Yeo
