Default Pirates Claim LH Starter Dana Eveland

"The Pirates are preparing to claim off waivers left-handed starter Dana Eveland, designated for assignment May 23 by the Toronto Blue Jays, according to an industry source.

Eveland, 26, has a 16-21 career record with a 5.66 ERA. For the season, he was 3-4 with a 6.45 ERA, with 21 strikeouts and 27 walks, much of that driven by three consecutive poor starts before being designated. In those starts, he allowed 34 baserunners over 9 1/3 innings.

    This is Evelandís official page.

The Piratesí 40-man roster currently is full, so someone else will have to come off to add Eveland.

12:55: The claim is done. All that is left is to add Eveland to the roster and clear someone else off the 40-man. Eveland has to be added to the 25-man roster, too."

I was cool with it when Dejan called it a waiver claim, but it turns out they traded Ronald Uviedo for him. Weird.

So is he a starter or a bullpen guy? Sounds like a lateral move to me.

He's going to join the rotation. He's been used as a starter almost all of his career, but did spend about half a season in 2005 in Milwaukee's bullpen.

Ok he looks to have more upside than karestens and burres and i think, we will trade Duke sometime this year i guess it is a cheap way to get a sp.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of this move, but I'm not as worked up about it as some people seem to be. I've never been a huge Uviedo fan. He's not that young, he's a right handed reliever, and he's pretty fly ball heavy. John Sickels had him as the Pirates 10th best prospect which I thought was insane. I'd have likely put him closer to 25 or so. You probably didn't have to give him up for Eveland, but I don't think he's a major loss or anything.

You're probably right he's not a huge loss...but for Dana Eveland? A dime-a-dozen player you could have found anywhere for free? Seems like a fairly significant reach just to fill out the rotation because of injury...I dunno.

Why give up a "prospect' of any sort for a guy who was optioned to AA? Could they have simply claimed him? If not, did they really need to give Uviedo for a 26 year old Toronto just gave up on? This strikes me a stupid, and I don't think that highly of Uviedo, but it is very likely he certainly COULD one day pitch in the ML in relief and be effective. I have a hard time believing it took that much to get Eveland.

Why pick him up when Lincoln is a better option. Looks to me like he has a lot to work on and was going down to minor league ball. Brillant move Neal. Can't wait to watch him and his near 7 ERA instead of Lincoln. I hate this move. It makes no sense. Another waste of a pitcher pickup.

I would be extremely excited, again, if that could happen. LOL...doubt it will though...all I can say is Rendon-Alvarez-Jones 3-4-5 looks pretty **** good.
