Senior writer for MLB.com Jonathan Mayo predicted the Pirates will select high school right-hand pitcher Jameson Taillon in the draft tonight.

“Obviously there is some risk in taking a high school pitcher, but if ever a guy who was going to be the exception to the rule, it’s this guy,” Mayo said on the Vinnie and Cook show.

Mayo loves the idea of the Pirates picking Taillon and believes it’s a “bold move.”

Taillon is being compared to Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett, who was drafted out of high school.

“I was told by scouts that (Taillon) is better than Beckett coming out of high school,” Mayo said. “That doesn’t mean he is going to be better than Beckett. In terms of where (Taillon) is, I think he’s a little more polished than Beckett was coming out.”

“History indicated that taking high school pitching at the top of the draft is dangerous, but there are always times where guys are going to make you push past that and Taillon is one of those guys,” he said.

The other option for the Pirates is high school shortstop Manny Machado.

“Big, athletic shortstops don’t grow on trees, but neither do top of the rotation starters,” Mayo told Vinnie and Cook.

The Washington Nationals will most likely choose catcher Bryce Harper from the College of Southern Nevada.

“No, there is no way (Washington) won’t take (Harper) with the number one pick,” Mayo said. “He is the best guy without question.”

National pitcher Stephen Strasburg is set to make his highly-anticipated start Tuesday against the Pirates.

“I think (Strasburg) will do wonderfully,” Mayo said. “His stuff is so good that I think he will be very successful, not only against the Pirates, but throughout his run now of what’s now his rookie season.”

    My question:

If we take Taillon, and regardless of when he signs (in the next couple weeks or closer to the deadline in August), what do we do with him this season?

Do we shut him down completely?

Do we send him to GCL?

    Other?

I don't think when he signs would make any difference on what should be done with him. I'd probably take him to Bradenton just to take a look, then go easy on him for the remainder of this season. Maybe slip him into a couple GCL games late in the season, but probably wait until fall instructionals to do anything serious. The aim would be to get him to West Virginia for the start of 2011.

Just follow what Florida did with Beckett when they drafted him. That seemed to work out pretty well.

Beckett was drafted in 1999, and made is ML debut as a September callup in 2001.

    That's unthinkable in today's ML.

If he takes too long to sign I would imagine he gets similar treatment to ZVR and Cain last year

So paint the other scenario then, suppose (for example) he signs by the end of the month...

I say skips GCL and goes to SC. Jnn or pfiv likely know the answer to this one but I would think that with Taillon's pedigree it would be SC

    So does ESPN.

On another note and unrelated to this draft, the Brewers are eating Jeff Suppans monster contract. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys.

Not really. Porcello was drafted in 2007 and made the opening day roster in 2009. Clayton Kershaw was taken in 2006 and in the majors to stay in May 2008. Madison Bumgarner was taken in 2007 and made his MLB debut in September 2009 (only one start, though).

All HS guys? That's pretty impressive to see HS guys make it to the MLB level that quickly
