    Default State College Spikes

    Pitchers:
    Zack Von Rosenberg (2009 draft)
    Zack Dodson (2009 draft)
    Zac Fuesser (2009 draft)
    Brooks Pounders (2009 draft)
Mitchell Fienemann (Australia - 20 year old)
Jarryd Sullivan (Australia - (20 year old)
Justin Ennis (2010 draft - roster filler)
Kevin Decker (2010 draft - roster filler or maybe not)
Sandobal Septimo (Dominican Republic 20 year old)
Eliecer Navarro (Panama 22 year old)
Teddy Fallon (2009 draft - roster filler)

    Catchers:
Matt Skirving (2010 draft - roster filler)
Miguel Mendez (Dominican Republic 22 year old)
Jairo Marquez (Venezuela 22 year old)

    Infielders:
Kelson Brown (2010 draft - roster filler)
Chase Lyles (2010 draft - roster filler)
    Walker Gourley (2009 draft)
Andury Acevedo (Dominican Republic 19 year old)
Gift Ngoepe (South Africa 20 year old)
Gerlis Rodriguez (Dominican Republic 22 year old)
Andy Vasquez (Dominican Republic 22 year old)

    Outfielders:
Justin Bencsko (2010 draft - roster filler)
Melvin De La Cruz (Dominican Republic 20 year old)
Kyle Saukko (2008 draft - roster filler)

That group may be a few players short as there's usually a decent number of guys rotating in and out. The pitchers are mostly very interesting players, but the hitters are kind of pathetic. Walker Gourley is worth following, as is Acevedo. Ngoepe is supposed to be pretty good in the field, but his hitting is still a question mark. The OF looks particularly weak, so hopefully some 2010 draft picks will be there to fill those spots soon (Mel Rojas hopefully). Wesley Freeman wasn't listed in the article I saw, but he was demoted from West Virginia after hitting .150 and striking out in half of his ABs. He may there there as well.

The Pirates have 3 nice looking OF'ers still in EST......Exicardo Cayones, Gavi Nivar and Greg Polanco. These guys should start in the GCL but you might see them at some point at SC.

Where are Colton Cain and Trent Stevenson? Those are the other two prominent, over-slot Pitchers from last year's draft.

Cain had an offseason back injury. I think he's expected to be ready to pitch July 1, which puts him behind schedule for the start of the season (4 days from now). He'll probably end up in State College at some point.

Stevenson managed to get 15 innings in the GCL in last year, so I thought he might open with State College. I guess they left him behind in Bradenton for now. I know they think his body is very much an unfinished product. They may want him to continue working on that. He could move at some point.

There's also a chance someone's name is just left off the list. I'm counting 24, with only 11 pitchers.

Stevenson also had an undisclosed injury but he should be ready soon.

Short season teams can carry up to 30 players so there is probably a few more unaccounted for players.

Apparently Trent Stevenson is injured too (something minor, July return date). The team put out an official release now with their camp roster and the only name I missed was 2009 draft pick Ryan Beckman (18th rounder, 20 years old). At least for now they're going with 25 players (13 position players and 12 pitchers).

    Is there an echo here?

The Spikes are offiicially listing Brooks Pounders at 6'5" 271 pounds. If any of the old numbers are to be believed he's gained a ton of weight over the last year. Baseball Reference listed him at 6'4" 225, which always seemed low. Perfect Game was listing him at 6'5" 220 before the draft which was definitely low. MLB.com's draft page listed him at 6'5" 240 which seemed more reasonable. The 271 kind of came out of nowhere.

Anybody know where P Jeff Inman is? He was last year's 12th-round pick - a highly regarded pitcher from Stanford.

"The 2010 season starts tomorrow at 7:05 with the debut of Von Rosenberg, who only pitched one inning in pro ball last year due to signing so late in the season. Considering the $1.2 M signing bonus the Pirates paid to lure him away from a commitment to LSU, this starting debut will easily be the biggest thing to follow in the Pirates' minor league system tomorrow."

Injury. He'll likely would have ended up in West Virginia rather than State College.
