Difficult cause he's played so well? Or difficult because NH has to admit a mistake?

Huntington said Iwamura, in a difficult move, will be placed on the open trade market.

"If there are no takers, we can option Aki to Triple-A," he said. "We can help Aki get back to the major leagues and get back to the player he is. The best way to do that is play."

The Pirates have 10 days to trade or designate him.

He WAS playing, and playing very poorly. This is killing NH because of the $$, plain and simple.

Does this mean, he no longer will be sneaking down to West Virginia to attack "Pearl Harper," every December 7?

    Pretty much it.

Moves that work and don't work happen all of the time. Eating $4.5 is always difficult

Maybe he will stay at AAA and move around the field and actually become a player again. He has shown some signs of hitting ability, though his range in the field is still lacking. He might still have 2-3 productive years left. As long as he is not pushing the next guy up out of playing time, I'm all for keeping him...................first base Aki?

Has anyone noticed that Iwamura is still on the 40 man? That means he was never DFAed and every reporter listed it wrong. It was just a straight option to AAA. I'm sure no one else even cares, but I was wondering why they didn't just option him. Turns out they did.

during one of the recent games I thought they had announced on TV that Aki was optioned?

I never gave it much thought either way about the DFA/Optioning. I'm kind of surprised that he took a demotion instead of high tailing it back to Japan

Aki would lose out on a couple million bucks if he took his ball and went home.

Aki should be playing 3B at Indy. It would be good for him mentally and physically. The Pirates might be able to dredge up some trade value for him if they play him at 3B.

And... there is nobody blocking him there. Pearce at 3B?? C'mon.

Priming Pearce for a utility role is the only explanation in which case, he needs to be playing some 3B. If the ankle/hammy is rough with Aki, planting for throws will be tough at 3B. His arm looked bad at 2B, gimpy hammy and acl will kill his arm at 3B. Terrible idea to move Aki to 3B in the name of trade value.

Wrong as usual. Terribly wrong. Second base is far more physical demanding than third base. Everyone knows that. You dream up a scenario in which Aki cannot make the throws from third base and then call it a bad idea? Have you ever seen Aki make a throw from third? How do you know he can't do it? Since when has his ability to throw (when not trying to turn a double-play) come into question?

Aki was a gold glove performer at 3B in Japan. He does not have to worry about turning the double play at 3B. Aki blew out his knee turning a double play and hasn't been able to do it since. Returning to his natural position and avoiding the source of his injury will help him mentally. Playing a position where his range limitations are not exposed will potentially make him more valuable to other teams.

He was awful at 2B. That is why he was demoted, remember?
