Heinz Field sod replaced between the numbers

    By Mark Kaboly, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Thursday, October 22, 2009

One of the reasons why the Steelers decided to do away with the DD GrassMaster turf at Heinz Field and go strictly with grass this year was so they could re-sod the middle of the field at any time. Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings will have freshly laid sod in between the numbers. "It wasn't in good shape last week," kicker Jeff Reed said. Workers started tearing out the old sod after last week's game. The field is scheduled to be resodded one more time at the end of the year. In years past, the field wasn't able to be patched because of its reinforced artificial fibers (DD GrassMaster). Instead, the field had to be totally resodded and placed over the existing surface.

I actually had no idea that they went completely to grass. While most of us were saying "go with complete field turf", they went in the complete opposite direction.

Interesting though. They are already replacing Sod and we haven't hit any bad weather yet and the WPIAL football games haven't even played. That ****ing playing surface is a **** money leech

Well, it is raining like a **** ant here in NW Indiana, so I am sure by Sunday, the rains will arrive. It could take the Peterson factor all but away.

I guess they're going to re-turf that field every year.

Multiple times a year it sounds like with the reasoning they gave for going away with the DD Turf master or whatever it's called and going with plain ole grass

I know that grass is said to lessen knee injuries and so on...

It does provide a bit of a home field advantage too.

    Whatever...

I think the Pitt games are harder on it than the WPIAL games one weekend a year.

    I kinda liked the mud.

Mud and snow is supposed to give the o-line an advantage. Maybe that's the idea behind going back to sod.

Most definitely. That many games on that field in a non growing season kills a surface that can't rejuvinate. I don't know if we'll see another 2007. They've been trying to plan since then so that the Steelers, Panthers and the WPIAL playoffs aren't all on the same weekend like in 2007. Then there was the rain that pured down for that Dolphins game as well that made it all worse on top of the fact that they laid sod on top of existing grass

The Steelers are going to have to live with the distinction that they have the ****tiest playing surface in the NFL as long as they remain on a grass surface

Anybody in Pittsburgh ever heard of R.O.I. which stands for RETURN ON INVESTMENT? With the way we sod the field wouldn't it be cheaper to pay the upfront money for the field turf and never have to sod the field again. Eventually your field turf investment will far exceed the amount it costs to sod this field monthly. Plus, you need to water and maintain it too which also adds to the natural grass costs.

I'm all for grass but for whatever reason it is just not working in Pittsburgh and we may need to abandon the idea of playing on it. Just my opinion.

No rain in the forecast yet for Pittsburgh on Sunday.

A blowout of the Vikes in any weather would sure go a long way to creating the belief that the Steelers are back.

The field should (SHOULD) be fine since the rain is moving thru today and it's probably covered, and will be relatively dry over the weekend.... But it is gonna get trashed again soon with the H.S. games.... But there are back-to-back Pitt/Steelers games this weekend (S. Florida/Minn), November 14/15 (Notre Dame/Cincinnati), and December 5/6 (UC/Oak).
