Default Post Gazette top 10 prospects list

It feels like a really weird time to be trying to put one together. I'd rather sit on it for two months and see how the draft shakes out and what happens with a few of the players, but this is what they ran in the Sunday paper.

    1. Tony Sanchez C
    2. Bryan Morris RHP
    3. Starling Marte OF
    4. Chase d'Arnaud SS
    5. Tim Alderson RHP
    6. Rudy Owens LHP
    7. Zach Von Rosenberg RHP
    8. Colton Cain LHP
    9. Diego Moreno RHP
    10. Danny Moskos LHP

If nothing else it made me kind of wonder where I'd rank everyone. I kind of have no idea what I'd do at this point. There's no way Tim Alderson still comes in at 5. Chase d'Arnaud at 4 is questionable at this point, but there have been promising signs recently. We'll see how it goes. It's hard to get a read on Marte due to the injury. Rudy Owens has handled the move to AA pretty well, with a little dip in the K rate being the only difference. Never pegged him as a strikeout guy in the majors anyway. Moreno and Moskos are both having very good seasons, but I always have trouble getting excited about a relief pitching prospect. With a starter there's always that chance that if things don't work out he ends up in the pen, but when you're already a reliever there isn't anywhere to go. I'll always be biased against bullpen guys.

The one guy who I will say is definitely missing from that list is Justin Wilson. Having seen him make two starts now I think I like him better than Owens, and definitely way more than Alderson.

I would have liked to see a list that attempts to slot Tailion and Allie in there. I know they're not signed and haven't pitched yet but it would make for an electric top ten, eh?

    Completely incomplete without Wilson. Dud.

What about Locke? He's pitched well enough to be promoted to Altoona..at least he was the last time I checked.

I would love to see what people here think about that list, or even their own list. Anyone else want to offer up their thoughts here.

I would take ZVR and Cain out of the top 10. I just have a problem with guys in the top 10 that basically haven't played a game.

I would insert Jarek Cunningham around 9 or 10 also Justin Wilson needs to be on that list.
Alderson is not a top 10 guy either.

Well, just for fun based on what I've read...
(I am including guys that haven't pitched and haven't even signed b/c those guys make the list interesting, IMO)

    1) James Tailion
    2) Tony Sanchez
    3) Stetson Allie
    4) Bryan Morris
    5) Starling Marte
    6) Zach Von Rosenburg
    7) Justin Wilson
    8) Jeff Locke
    9) Brock Holt
    10) Colton Cain

Good to see Moskos having some success. Maybe he'll be a contributor to the big club after all.

Its not very impressive list right now:
    1. Tony Sanchez C
    2. Bryan Morris RHP
    3. Starling Marte OF
    4. Rudy Owens, LHP
    5. Justin Wilson, LHP
    6. Chase d'Arnaud SS
    7. Nathan Adcock,
    8. Jarek Cunningham, 3B/SS
    9. Daniel Moskos, LHP
    10. Quincy Latimore/Brock Holt/any of another number of players...

You could also put Pounders, ZVR, Dodson, and/or Cain in there somewhere too...but they really haven't done anything so its more difficult (as PFVA indicated).

After this years' draft that can/would all change though.

Figure it this way: IF the Pirates sign Taillon and Allie the top 10 immediately looks like--
    1. Jameson Taillon
    2. Stetson Allie
    3. Tony Sanchez
    4. Bryan Morris
    5. Starling Marte
    6. Rudy Owens
    7. Justin Wilson
    8. Chase D'Arnaud
    9. Nathan Adcock
    10. Jarek Cunningham/Daniel Moskos

If the Pirates then go on to sign almost ANY of their other top 10 picks you'd see them inserted here as well. Rojas would challenge for a top 10 spot...Kime certainly would challenge ZVR, Cain, and others....

This draft is one of the best....if they sign players the organization will be looking a ton better.

Yeah that's kinda tough...Not sure why Locke would make it over Adcock...Adcock has better numbers and is younger....both have similar upside...and no Rudy Owens????

Thanks for the input guys. I enjoy reading people's takes on these matters. I like Latimore, but he strikes out a ton and never walks. He is young though. I've been touting Adcock for awhile. I also like Locke. I understand everyones take on the guys who haven't done anything yet.

Rudy Owens = Zach Duke lite. He will be lucky to be a fifth starter in the majors, IMO.

Possibly...the task will be for him to not get hit...if he can be avoid peoples bats he'll be fine.

I thought the Bucs taught all of their young hurlers to "pitch to contact" or do their ERAs just make it seem that way???
