Default Possible FA wingers other than Whitney

I'd be OK with Whitney if it was just for one year and no more than $3 mil. ( he made 3.5 last season). He had 21+37 last year, and there's no reason to think he couldn't do at least that next season alongside either Geno or Sid.

But, like I said, I would be OK with it. I'd much rather them let Gonch go and spend that money on 2 younger guys, if the money could work., which I think it can.

Here are 7 forwards that I think are possibilities to play a top 6 role with either Sid or Geno.

    LW'ers
Frolov is out of the price range IMO.

Alex Tanguay-> had a down year last season making 2.5 for the lightning. I'd think they could get him for maybe the same money over 2-3. Will be 31 in November

Raffi Torres-> had a pretty good year, made 2.75. Would have much rather the Pens got him at the deadline instead of Poni. I think the Sabres may really make a push to keep him around as his style of playing like his pants are on fire fits in there. Plus he's due a raise to prob. around 3-3.5. Only 27.

Taylor Pyatt-> former 8th overall selection hasn't lived up to expectations and will be 29 by the time the season starts. Could be the kind of guy that could come cheap and find his touch playing alongside Sid or Malkin.

Marcus Naslund is also a free agent that is old and could maybe come cheap, but no thanks.

    Rw'ers

Lee Stempniak->had a terrible season last year and really hasn't done anything since leaving STL. Even then he only had 52 pts in 06-07 then 38 in 07-08. He's young(26), has upside. Someone will prob overpay. I don't want him anyway. Plus he made 3.5 last yr and may get more.

Marek Svatos->a guy they could maybe get around 2-2.5. Made 2.35 last season. Only played in 54 games, 7+4 -11. Only 27

Evgeny Artyukhin-> A monster at 6'4" 255. 9+7 -4 split between the Ducks and Thrash. Only 26. Might be a stretch as a top 6 forward. Made only 1 Mil last season.

Max Afiniganov-> Really rejuvenated his career with the Thrash last season after no one wanted him 24+37. May not be affordable, is soft and streaky. Will be 31 around start of season.

I'd personally like Torres, but Raffi is prob too expensive. Afiniganov is probably the long shot. Artyuhkin may not be able to play with Either Sid or Geno.
Pyatt, I think would be interesting and relatively cheap.

All said, I would not mind at all if they got one of these guys.
I expect them to add at least one winger, but also think they will enter camp hoping that a guy like Nick Johnson sticks. Letestu and Jeffry are also possibilities to make the big club out of camp. Tangradi is another year away IMO.

Tanguay is more of a Playmaker than Goal scorer

Torres Got Benched in Buffalo in the Playoffs !! No Thanks

Pyatt just resigned yesterday with Phoenix

    Naslund has Retired

    Svatos is Injured Plaqued

Artyukhin is a Headcase who takes ridiculously stupid Penalties

Afinagenov is going to want to cash in on his "Big Season"

I Still say Whitney, Frolov or Zherdev, Also forgot about Stempniak

    "Injured Plaqued"? Sounds painful.

I don't think they can afford Frolov, I didn't forget Stempniak, he's a bum though.

Also, wouldn't you say Geno is more of a scorer? Wouldn't a guy Like Tanguay benefit Malkin by way of "making plays" in which Geno could finish? Not sure why you think his being a playmaker makes him a non-option.

Torres was playing really well for Columbus before the trade and subsequent benching. That goes either way.

I forgot about Zherdev, and I agree with you on him. Would love to see him here.

now dont bash me for this, what I am goin to say is a [HIGH-LIGHT]WHAT IF?[/HIGH-LIGHT], but IF we did trade, why not maybe someone like Steven Weiss from FL? I think he would be a great fit in our top 6, and that is just a personal opinion. Only reason I bring that up, is because it was said that Horton and Weiss were not in the goods in FL.

I wanted them to trade for Rastislav Olesz at the deadline last year. He has a cannon of a shot. Granted, he's underperformed as a former 1st rounder, but he's only 24 and I think would play very well alongside Sid or Geno. Plus he would be easier to aquire via trade than Weiss, IMO

We have got 11, 258, 333 in cap space. If it worked out perfect I would trade one of either TFK/Dupuis plus a pick for Versteeg. Sign Whitney which would leave us about 6 million to sign a couple d men.

    Kunitz Sid Whitney
    Versteeg Geno Tangradi/other
    Cooke Staal TFK/Dupuis
    Rupp Adams Talbot
    Godard

I'd like to see how a Max-Geno-Dupuis line would work out, or was that idea already used?

It's certainly not a great year for FA wingers.

The Leafs and Penguins have talked about a package that would include Kulemin+ for the Penguins first round draft pick. The Penguins are picking 20th overall.

I think the Pens should focus on signing FA's and RFA's. Hang on to the draft picks (or trade picks for more picks) and build their farm system. Call-ups from the minors play for cheap. The Pens need to upgrade their minor league talent.
