Default Milledge won't be Lasting too much longer

I planned to start this thread before I read Dejan's story this morning....

Mark it down, Milledge is done.
He is awful in the field. His two misplays last night cost them the game. They guy simply cannot track a fly ball - he's got depth perception issues with his eyes or something. He's got a decent arm and decent, overrated speed but he can't track the ball. Corner OF's that are butchers in the field and have no power do not last long in MLB.

Last night clinched it. I am convinced he is no longer part of any sort of vision for the Pirates future starting OF. Its difficult to imagine a defensively challenged, singles-hitting corner OF keeping a spot on the bench.

He may start tonight. He may remain a Pirate the rest of the season. He won't be here next season. Mark it down. He's done.

    Now I read this morning...

"If that record and the Texas heat was not enough, there also was more fire being exchanged on the side.

In the sixth inning, bench coach Gary Varsho was involved in a boisterous discussion in the Pirates' dugout with right fielder Lastings Milledge and Crosby, this after a blown hit-and-run in which Milledge was thrown out at second and Crosby never swung. It was not clear who was at fault -- either player could have missed a sign -- but Varsho and Milledge became spirited enough that they had to be separated.

When the Pirates then took the field, Milledge walked toward where Crosby was taking his infield warmup, but nothing came of that.

After the seventh, according to a team source, Varsho, also the outfield instructor, expressed further displeasure with Milledge for failing to catch Michael Young's pop-fly triple to right that keyed Texas' tying rally.....
The above was Milledge's second misplay on the night, the first coming in an ugly second inning: Crosby booted a grounder and, right after that, Milledge failed to track a skied double to right-center by Josh Hamilton. That put runners on second and third with nobody out, but Karstens got three quick outs and conceded just the one run."

    Steve Pearce blows.

I'll believe them giving up on Milledge when I see it. Power or no power, they need a guy hitting .274 in the lineup. His fielding has been fairly terrible but it;s not like anyone was naming a guy that could never hit (Ronny Cedeno) the SS of the future

At one point last year John Perrotto wrote on the Pirates Report site that the whole team thinks Varsho is a joke and they would all laugh and mock him behind his back because he thinks he's some kind of drill sergeant, but has no idea what he's doing.

I've heard similar things about Varsho too and still believe he's the ****** in charge of putting in all of the dreadful defensive shifts (which is probably what the argument was between the 2).

As I said, I'll believe them giving up on Milledge when I see it. Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't but Steve Pearce is no answer now or long term.

Varsho may be the one responsible for the defensive shifts...but he can't go out there and make cutch wannabe take proper routes to fly balls. I understand the avg needs to be in the lineup....but getting in someone's *** because they can't make a routine play in the field is needed....Thrilledge, Crosby, Cedeno....whomever....someone show some **** balls and start smackin some headcases around. JRs nice boy approach is obviously working for these guys.

cripes I'm watching them make fun of Milledge on Sportscenter right now....showing a Rangers OF catch a flyball and saying..."that's the way u catch a fly ball, take the correct route, straight line..."

Even those *** wipes get it. We see it daily...when does it stop getting funny and **** someone off?

    Ask Gary Varsho.

Milledge has looked a lot worse in his short time in right field than he has in left for whatever reason. Not that he looked very good in left either, but...

Anyway, I think the real question is who made the decision to DH Ryan Church and play Milledge in right where he's looked lost? It doesn't make any sense. Milledge has hit fairly well recently and played poor defense. Church hasn't hit at all and plays solid defense. It just doesn't make any sense. Nothing with the lineup does really.

Varsho has done next to noting to help improve this team. The ******* needs fired before any player gets hammered. The outfield shifts have cause more runs and more hits than any of the routes and fielding. Line drives after line drives thanks to shifts off of the lines.... then there's the actual instruction... If the routes are bad... then work with the players on the routes. What the fuick is Gary Varsho doing besides sitting in the dugout and picking his nose?

Screw Varsho. He's done next to nothing to deserve any sort of defense. It was simply a **** poor coaching hire IMO

Its too early to give up on Cedeno. Unlike Milledge, he's not done yet. He's got the talent, he just has mental problems.
