    Add injury to insult....

Walker hurt as Pirates lose again, 14-4
    Saturday, June 26, 2010
    By Chuck Finder, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Neil Walker, one of the Pirates' rookie bright spots, may well have sustained a concussion this morning when he collided with right fielder Ryan Church diving for a foul ball at Oakland-Alameda County Stadium. That touched off a seventh inning in which the Pirates originally trailed by a single run but gave up seven more en route to a 14-4 loss -- their 15th consecutive road defeat.

Walker flew from second base and the back of his head met Church's right thigh, snapping Walker's head forward. He seemed to lose consciousness briefly, but was laughing with his teammates, Pirates trainers and Oakland A's team doctors before he walked off, a towel draped around his shoulders.

No immediate word on his condition was available this morning, other than he hit his head and was being evaluated by doctors.

Walker was 3 for 4 before departing, and his groundbreaking homer -- the Pirates' first this season in the fifth inning and first after 59 innings without one -- plus his two runs scored greatly propped an offense that mustered two runs in a first inning where four consecutive Pirates reached. He was hitting .295 with three homers, after that fifth-inning clout just over the scoreboard in right field, and 12 RBI. If he misses much time, given the departure of Aki Iwamura, that leaves Bobby Crosby -- the starting shortstop in six consecutive games -- and Delwyn Young as the only remaining viable second basemen. However, supplanted third baseman Andy LaRoche has worked there to some degree in practice.

I played in a mens league in Raleigh NC a number of years ago and was pitching in one game where our 2B and RF collided on a similar pop fly. The popup was right between the 2B and RF. At the last second the two saw one another and the 2B tried to jump over the RF and the RF tried to slide under the 2B. The 2B knee hit the RF square in the neck and, sad to say, the RF died right there on the field as we tried to give him CPR. One of the saddest days of my life. 23 year old guy with a one year old daughter died on the field playing baseball.

There was some on field debate abut whether he would stay in or not last night in that crapfest. I would think that it's not going to be too serious. You normally get a better feel for concussion severity the next day
