    Default Pirates acquire Sean Gallagher

Total Neal Huntington move, definitely saw it coming. Deal is for cash considerations, not even a PTBNL.

Gallagher was Baseball America's #82 overall prospect in 2008. He's been a starter in the minors with 4 pitches and has dominated for the most part (career 2.82 minor league ERA). Time in the majors has been a completely different story as he just can't get hitters to chase like he did in the minors. 7.44 K/9, 5.25 BB/9, and a 5.75 ERA in 173 MLB innings.

He's out of options and will join the major league team tomorrow. Roster move to come (Justin Thomas probably).

sounds like a kid with control issues. Maybe we can give him the meek/hanrahan treatment and straighten him out.

On paper they look like 4 average pitches, nothing that really stands out, but a decent mix. Unfortunately they've played like 4 terrible pitches in the majors thus far. 90-93 fastball, slider around 84, change around 81-82, and a curve down in the 73-75 range. The word seems to be that he has trouble repeating his delivery and maybe with his arm action on different pitches.

The Pirates are really loading up on pitchers from the Cubs 2008 prospect list. Jose Ascanio, Kevin Hart, Donnie Veal, and now Sean Gallagher. They're only missing Jose Ceda and Jeff Samardzija and they'll have the complete collection.

I'll bet Samardzija wishes he was a steeler or a bear or maybe even a raider!

Turns out Daniel McCutchen got optioned rather than Justin Thomas. Can't say he didn't earn it. There have been 3 games this season where Pirates pitchers have allowed 4 HRs in the same game. McCutchen has started all 3 of them.

that's just as likely to keep him pitching over the all star break as anything. He probably comes back at the next time they need a 5th starter.

*shrug* He's 24 so there is always hope--look at Garrett Jones--but honestly its not an acquisition that I am overly excited about. We didn't give up anything so its ok...give it a shot.

They don't need a 5th starter for about 2 weeks. By then Zach Duke should be off his rehab assignment.

Hopefully Duke pitches well and they're able to trade him for something useful. I've had my fill of Duke and Maholm both in the rotation. Duke's arb number next year is surely to be higher than his actual worth.

Which actually doesn't say much for the arbitration process, but that's fodder for a thread all it's own.
