Default Bettis speaks out about Big Ben

Bettis speaks out about Big Ben
    By Jerry DiPaola, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Thursday, July 8, 2010

[IMGL]http://i28.tinypic.com/4uh3bc.jpg[/IMGL]Former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis shared a tee box Wednesday with some of the greatest names in golf, laughing with Arnold Palmer and hitting long drives onto the slick fairways of Oakmont Country Club with Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer.

But when the celebrity exhibition ended and he stashed away his big driver adorned with his signature No. 36 he had a warning for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Asked what Roethlisberger must do to win back fans after twice being accused of sexual assault in the past year, Bettis said there is no easy answer for his former teammate.

"It is a situation where he has to prove his heart is in the right place," Bettis said. "And I know from knowing Ben that his heart is in the right place."

Bettis joined Roethlisberger in the Steelers' backfield in 2004 and '05, retiring after winning Super Bowl XL. He said he shares text messages with Roethlisberger but has not spoken with him this year.

If asked, he would offer the following advice:

"He has to keep his head down, play hard and give back to the community," said Bettis, 38. "If he does that, slowly but surely, he will be able to work through the process."

Another warning: "It is not going to be a quick fix."

Bettis said the Steelers could be embarking on a tough season, especially with Roethlisberger suspended for at least the first four games.

"They have an uphill battle," he said.

He pointed to the season-ending Achilles injury suffered by right tackle Willie Colon, which could weaken the ground game while it must compensate for the absence of Roethlisberger.

"The running game is going to have to sustain this team until Ben comes back," Bettis said. "Now, the question mark is the offensive line and how well they perform without having their anchor. It is going to be difficult, but it gives (the Steelers) the chance to kind of be the underdogs. They haven't been the underdogs for a long time."

So,Colon is the anchor of the OL???

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be happy to never hear Jerome "ponder" about the Steelers again.

Between Bettis, Tomlin, the media, Colon's agent and our front office what am I missing with Colon? From all the chatter this guy is the greatest thing since sliced bread .

On the other hand, if the other teams about believe the Colon hype (which would be incredibly stupid but you never know) and look at that position as being irreplaceable, perhaps a cinder block in that position might surprise a few folks and bring a player down.

Could this lead to pressure being applied to Colon's vacated position?

    Could it be that predictable?

Do I, in fact, just need to see some fragging football? C'mon, I'm even looking forward to pre-season!

I hope that becausse of the absence of Colon that we don't get some Nancy Girl tackle that then, makes the Steelers thiink, " we got to break the bank to keep this great Colon."

My sweet zombie grandmother could at least make a rusher take the long route and delay them for a couple of seconds.

In the mean time, we get a season without the Prolapsing Colon!

Colon is okay, but calling him the anchor of the on-line is akin to calling maholm the ace of the Buccos staff, if they are considered the best, improvements are seriously in order.

I would like to see how well Ben and the offense could do had they a line like the ones we used to have in the 90's

Unfortunately, Colon is going to be the scapegoat for poor performance, if they perform poorly, where the real blame should be in the Steelers FO for neglecting the OL over the past decade.

I'm probably going to be in the minority here, but when did that ever stop me from voicing my opinion, but I really don't give a **** what Bettis has to say. Loved him as a player, but I have little respect for his opinion now.

Of course he is! Just when the boat gets going, Colon has a false start or a hold......just like throwing out an anchor!
