Polamalu Says the Steelers Can Win Without Roethlisberger

Strong safety Troy Polamalu was asked by Yahoo! Sports’ Doug Farrar about Ben Roethlisberger, and the four-to-six game suspension that the quarterback faces. One thing Polamalu wanted very much to impart to those who are worried about the 2010 Steelers as a result of all the off-season turmoil is his resolve to see things right. “One thing that’s been kind of a good experience for us is that we’ve won games without Ben; people don’t seem to understand that;” Polamalu said.

The Steelers have a 5-4 record in the nine regular season games in which Roethlisberger has not played since his 2004 rookie season. “He’s missed quite a few games in the NFL, and we’ve done well because our defense understands that we need to apply that much more pressure. I think that this will be no different in that way, the only thing that’s different is the publicity that’s brought to the subject. There’s no question that we can’t win a championship without Ben, but there’s also no question that we can win games without star players.”

Last year, the D seemed to look around and thing "What the...?" a fair amount. The lack of concentration hurt us more times than I care to remember. Maybe Troy and Aaron Smith being back will flick the switch and power things up this year.

This has to be a year where we get back and stamp some authority on, at least, the division. Some pundits (admittedly, most of them being blog pundits) have the Browns dumping us in the basement. Possible but not probable. Personally, I would consider sweeping the division as important and I'm not convinced any of the teams in ours can do that this year.

Just a few weeks to pre-season...

Our defense has shown a penchant for rebounding after an off year, usually with a vengeance. I like their chances of dominating again this year, especially if Hood and maybe Harris can step up and allow for a good rotation along the d-line to keep Smith more fresh by the end of the season. A healthy Troy with the return of B-Mac, should tighten up the secondary. I am thinking that they will more than help the Steelers finish 11-5, because they also have a huge chip on their shoulders leftover from last season.

Let's just hope that Tomlin's ego is kept in check and he lets DL do what he does better than anybody else!

Let's hope that it's not kept in check TOO much and he DOESN'T let Arians do what he does not do better than anyone else.

Good point! I just think Tomlin's ego is fueled by the accolades he got as "a defensive genius" prior to coming here. To your point, he needs to let go of the "defensive genius" stuff and be the head coach.

OK, I'm getting a bit older and my memory ain't what it used to be but when was Tomlin ever considered a "defensive genius" either here or his previous stops.
