    Angry JR goes to Church

First JR says we need to get Church going? Church continually goes ohfer. Then he puts in Milledge who hits a HR and would've had 2 of our 5 RBIs had an umpire not gotten in the way. JR BENCHES Milledge despite this, saying that the young man needs to learn how to DRIVE the ball.

Note to JR....Church needs to learn how to HIT the ball. BENCH Him!!!!

Good fix, esp considering that, in today's paper, JR says that they have a 'Church' opion for NEXT year. Heart be still.

It's possible that management thinks it's better for Milledge's development to have a competitor/platoon situation. In fact, Milledge actually started playing better when Chruch was getting a lot of the starts....

its more possible that management is on crack and Church is their dealer. He needs to go and he needs to go yesterday.

In Dejan's Milledge/Church article he has quotes from Huntington about how the team can keep Church beyond this year. Great...

We have to keep Church and Duke, because they have good looking wives for the commercials!

    Wasn't that Dillinger's downfall?

im currently watching sundays game i taped from earlier this afternoon, and milledge hits a homerun to center in his first at bat. Im sure glad that they keep sitting him in favor of church who im sure will get the start after the break. I really dont know what the **** they are thinking, i hope they are trying to get church to look good come trade time, because i cant see one single thing that they would want to keep him around for.

Milledge belted that one to dead center. Where has this power been? He better start from here on out.

There is no (good) reason Milledge shouldn't be starting everyday. Kid looks to be coming around and has shown a little power.

Milledge has been handled really well, imho, and having Church play substantially has actually helped in his development. I think he will gradually get back to starting most games in the second half...

Ryan Church has an OPS of .560 over his first 167 plate appearances. Go back through all of the years of this streak and think about how many awful players there were. In all of those years there have been a total of 8 players who made it to 200 plate appearances with an OPS under .600. Most of those didn't make it much past 200 plate appearances either.

    Tom Prince (C) 1993: .580 OPS 204 PA
    Kevin Polcovich (SS/2B) 1998: .501 OPS 230 PA
    Doug Strange (3B) 1998: .433 OPS 201 PA
    Abraham Nunez (SS/2B) 1999: .550 OPS 301 PA
Jack Wilson (SS) 2001: .550 OPS 425 PA
    Pat Meares (2B) 2001: .548 OPS 284 PA
Adrian Brown (CF) 2002: .582 OPS 232 PA
The Great and Powerful Luis Rivas (SS/2B) 2008: .578 OPS 223 PA

7 of the 8 were up the middle players where offensive expectations aren't quite as high. Only Doug Strange as a 3B was at a position that requires offensive production near that of a corner OF like Church. Oddly enough Strange was also by far the worst on the list and the second worst was playing on that same 1998 team. The one to get the most plate appearances was rookie SS Jack Wilson in 2001.

Honorable mention to 2010 2B Aki Iwamura who made it all the way up to 193 plate appearances with a .558 OPS. Also looking to avoid going into the group: 2010 Andy LaRoche (.601 through 221 PA) and 2010 Ronny Cedeno (.597 through 257).

I think you are confusing him with J. Edgar Hoover.
