    Default Pirates Trade Deadline Rumors

Maybe we can use a separate thread like this to post and discuss the deadline rumors as they come up....

    Dotel
"The Mets have discussed relievers Octavio Dotel and Scott Downs, report Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. John Harper of the New York Daily News reported yesterday that the Mets scouted Downs and Kevin Gregg over the weekend.

    Hanrahan
Morosi noted on Twitter last night that the Pirates are also getting calls on Joel Hanrahan, "but the price remains very high." Armed with a 95.6 mph fastball, Hanrahan has 56 strikeouts in 40.6 innings. His 12.39 K/9 ranks behind only Carlos Marmol, Billy Wagner, and Brian Wilson in the National League.

    Maholm
The Dodgers expect they'll be able to add a starter and reliever in the next ten days, giving up better prospects while the other team pays the player's salary. Not the best long-term strategy. The Dodgers have been linked to Paul Maholm, Roy Oswalt, Ted Lilly, Jake Westbrook, Fausto Carmona, David Aardsma, and the Blue Jays' relievers.

    Carrasco
At least five teams have inquired about Pirates reliever D.J. Carrasco, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (via Twitter). The 33-year-old makes $950K this season and is under team control through 2012. We have seen recent indications that it's a hostile market for teams looking to add relievers, though there are some options available.

The righty has posted a 4.14 ERA in 50 innings, so it's not surprising that teams are asking the Pirates about him. The White Sox non-tendered Carrasco last winter and he has responded with 7.0 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9. His $950K salary makes him one of the cheaper relievers available.

    Maholm
The Dodgers are interested in Pirates lefty Paul Maholm, reports Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Yahoo's Tim Brown wrote yesterday that the Dodgers "have been very aggressive in their pursuit of pitching."

Maholm, 28, has a 4.03 ERA, 4.5 K/9, and 3.2 BB/9 in 114 innings, with nine home runs allowed. With so few strikeouts, it's likely that Maholm's ERA will be higher from here on out. On the plus side, his 50.3% groundball rate ranks 12th in the National League according to FanGraphs. That rate has been higher in previous seasons.

Maholm signed a three-year, $14.5MM extension in January of 2009. He's got only $1.86MM remaining this year, $5.75MM in 2011, and a $9.75MM club option for '12 with a $750K buyout. That's $8.36MM guaranteed through '11, which has to be enticing for the Dodgers given their financial constraints."

Good idea with the thread. As the rumors come in, just throw em in the this thread and keep it updating.

I saw all of the twitter rumors last night. Not a surprise to see all of the relievers listed. Hanrahan IMO is the only "safe" one there in that list

At least this year shouldn't be a salary dump. The Pirates could stand pat and hope for improvements and be considered serious right now.

Someone will get traded and I expect a better return than in previous year's trades. As I've begged for before...............a .300+, 15 hr.+ shortstop should not be out of the question, for Maholm, this year. There are some contenders hurting for pitching.

Not sure why they would want to trade Hanrahan. Move Dotel if you want but I think I'd keep the other bullpen guys unless someone blew me away.

TIOPS mixes in a lot of BS while occasionally reporting legit rumors. We'll see if this rumor pops up elsewhere in the next 10 days...

Carmona is only 26? I could have sworn he was older than that.

You're not getting as .300 anything for Paul Maholm Contenders might be hurting for some pitching but you're talking about Paul Maholm who on a contending team is probably a 4th-5th pitcher. Maholm is a 1.40+ WHIP guy that can't strike anyone out with a high BB rate this year. Sure teams are looking at him because he's cheap and the Pirates like to dump at the Trade Deadline but teams aren't going to give us what you want in return for Maholm....

...if they do, I'll be excited. Make no mistakes about that but we're over valuing Maholm IMO

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick profiled the bullpen market. He rated Dotel as the second best reliever available behind Capps...

"....which leaves Dotel as the third-best pitcher in the Pittsburgh bullpen. The consensus is that general manager Neal Huntington envisioned flipping Dotel at the deadline when the Pirates signed him to a one-year, $3.5 million contract in January.

Dotel has been with eight teams and pitched in the postseason three times, so he's not going to get flustered by a pennant race. But he's more a setup guy than a closer at age 36. He walks too many hitters, and lefties have a 1.097 OPS in 54 at-bats against him this season. The thought of Dotel facing Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Adrian Gonzalez or Joey Votto in a big spot for a contending club in September is a little cringe-inducing -- and those are just the National League's lefty sluggers.

"He can maybe pitch the seventh inning for you," an American League scout said of Dotel. "He has some good cut-life on the fastball, but he's kind of a high-wire act back there."

Teams looking for a more low-profile Pirates pickup might check out D.J. Carrasco, who has limited righty hitters to a .661 OPS this season."

Is it alright to chuckle hearing Matt Capps name on the trade rumor wire?

That's interesting. Makes you wonder that the Pirates could definitely be moving a pitcher and looking to fill that spot by trading to get one of their own. How strange it would be to be buyers and not ask for Matt Morris

Benny would have an anger heart attack if we got Carmona. If I remember correctly Carmona is a strict GB pitcher with poor K rates

I feel bad for the team that would rather trade for Capps than Dotel. I guess it depends on need. Dotel is pretty bad against lefties but lights out against righties. Capps is mediocre against both. But Capps eek.. His BB rate might be back to normal but Capps' H/9 is very high which really suggests he is getting very lucky especially since his K rate is still a pedestrian 7 per 9.

I just want to get the better return

Wow...getting a more lively Paul Maholm..............boy is that EXCITING!

    Not.

A guy with a career H9 of 9.2, a career BB9 of 3.8 and a career K9 of only 5.4..............Paul Maholm actually has better career numbers.
