Default Steelers sign Jones, place Colon on IR

The Steelers added depth to their offensive line today when they signed six-year veteran Adrian Jones. Financial terms of the one-year contract were not disclosed.

Jones (6-4, 330) was originally drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round (132nd overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Kansas. Jones started 44 games for the Jets from 2004-07 before being waived late in the 2007 season. He was then signed by the Kansas City Chiefs and started 10 games in 2008 at guard. Jones was signed by the Houston Texans during the 2009 offseason but was released.

To make room for Jones on the roster, the Steelers placed veteran offensive tackle Willie Colon on their Reserve/Injured List. Colon suffered an Achilles injury last month and had season-ending surgery.

I must be losing my touch, because I completely missed the fact that they were even talking to him...

My first reaction is that it could possibly be a decent signing, if for nothing more than depth... But why was he bounced from the Jets to the Chiefs to the Texans and out the door again?

It went totally under my radar, too (mind you, there are times when I'm a little oblivious).

Even if all he does is stand and not jump offsides or go generally for the pre-emptive motion, he's a filler.

I can only find records for OT. This is where I get to show my noobishness: Is there a big difference between OG and OT? Would it be possible to transition? Just for flexibility's sake.

Best I could find was that he played tackle in college, was drafted as a tackle, but was listed as a guard with the Texans... He actually started his college career as a TE...

My thought as well. He must have come cheap.

We just need a hole filler, since Colon is the best lineman in the league, we don't need to look to replace him anyway.

I mean really, does the FO actually think we have a great line? Shouldn't this be an opportunity to address the O-line issues, not just grab up more cast-offs from around the league. This guy is just camp fodder. Not what we need for the O-line right now. Our entire starting line is camp fodder for any other team.

An odd source (and not always reliable), but from Wikipedia...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_...an_football%29

Adrian Denard Jones (born June 10, 1981 in Dallas, Texas) is an American football offensive tackle who is currently a free agent. He was drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He played college football at Kansas.

Jones has also played for the Kansas City Chiefs.

On July 21, 2010, Jones signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers
'I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ***-kickers, ****-kickers and Methodists.'

Only free Agent OT worth signing still thinks he is worth 4+ mill and he is not, that is why he wasnt resigned with Dallas.

He is nothing more than a camp body who was brought in to compete with Foster and Scott.
I doubt essex actualy was being considered cause I have been reading that the steelers feel him better suited for Lt and we all no Starks is garbage at RT.

Is it fair to assume that, if our starters stink, how much worse are the backups ? Are the Steelers so terrible at choosing linemen or do they not consider these guys high on the list or of much worth ?

My next question is, does most of the NFL have the low down on picking good offensive linemen or are they better at developing these guys or both ?

I want to correct myself. I think Starks is good and Kemo is good. I have a feeling Kemo is going to get better and better. As long as he doesn't balloon up too much.

I hope thats a rhetorical question.

If nothing else maybe it finally gets Tony Hills off the roster.
