Pitt's Recruiting Fortunes Continue With Terrell Chestnut

Pitt football pulled in another key recruiting commitment today from QB/DB Terrell Chestnut.

With Jameel Poteat’s announcement to attend Pitt yesterday, Chestnut gives Pitt its second four-star recruit in as many days as rated by both Rivals and Scout.

Chestnut is a dual threat at QB in high school, rushing for more than 2,000 yards over the past two seasons and throwing for over 1,400 yards. He’s racked up an amazing 53 combined TDs over that span.

But it’s his defensive skills that Pitt covets the most and he’s expected to play in the secondary for the Panthers. He has 17 career interceptions and 180 tackles.

With defensive skills like that, he expects to play right away in 2011 as a true freshman. With Chestnut’s commitment, Panther fans should feel a lot more comfortable with Dave Wannstedt’s decision to play 2010 incoming freshman, Todd Thomas, at wide receiver. Scout ranks him as the #19 safety in the country, while Rivals has him at #26.

Oh yeah, and this isn’t your typical athlete. Chestnut plans to enroll in Pitt’s pre-med program and wants to be a pediatrician:

“I was very comfortable at Pitt,” Chestnut said. "When I had a chance to tour the campus and visit the pre-med department, it made my decision a lot easier.

“I’ve been interested in medicine my whole life. I’ve always wanted to be a pediatrician, so I can give back to kids.”

You never can tell, but this doesn’t sound like a kid who’s going to be giving Pitt any trouble off the field as they’ve had recently.

Chestnut reportedly had more than 30 offers from schools including Penn State, LSU, Michigan, and West Virginia to name a few. With two strong seasons, Pitt’s recruiting success really seems to be taking off a bit. Now it’s up to Wannstedt and the Panthers of 2010 to continue the success.

Wankstead's upside - pretty good recruiter.

Wankstead's downside - pretty ****ty developer.

    It's a bittersweet blend.
