Steelers sign first-round draft pick Pouncey
    By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Friday, July 30, 2010

The Steelers signed first-round pick Maurkice Pouncey to a five-year contract today, and he is expected to report to training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe.

Financial terms of the deal were not available.

The Steelers will open camp with all of their draft picks under contract.

Pouncey is a 6-foot-5, 304-pound center/guard from the University of Florida.

[HIGH-LIGHT]To make room for Pouncey, second-round pick Jason Worilds and free agent offensive lineman Flozell Adams, the Steelers released three players: linebackers Lindsey Witten and Johnny Williams, and long snapper Matt Stewart.[/HIGH-LIGHT]

"The deal is believed to be an $18 million contract that includes $10.6 in guaranteed monies. We will not know the exact numbers or max escalators until the contract is filed with the NFLPA, but Pouncey should be in agreement by the 4PM deadline today. Agent Joel Segal was reportedly looking for an initial contract totaling around 20-22 million, but Pouncey got slotted a bit lower as the picks ahead of him slowly came to terms though out the day on Friday."

I'm REALLY glad he signed basically "on time", and won't miss any camp... As I was telling Kipper on the phone, I fully expect him to be a legitimate candidate as starter at right guard this season... Missing any time at camp would have only diminished his chances, so I'm glad that it is not an issue.

Get him to camp and learning the system and then, as soon as he's ready, chuck him in for Buggy Boy.

I'm trying to figure this one out as well. I'm going to assume that it's either Hartwig or Trai Essex since Pouncey was drafted as a Guard/Center

there's really IMO no good reason why Pouncey can't legitimately start this year or at least compete for that start with an equal and fair chance. I mean, he'd be competing against Trai Essex . Pouncey can't be that far behind Essex thsi year and the talent is defintiely far beyond that of Essex who is really nothing more than a backup Guard. It'll be a matter of learning the play book and blocking schemes but something tells me that everyone will be learning new blocking schemes and Kugler is said to not have confusing blocking schemes

Hartwig, because he could get pushed around by old ladies in Giant Iggle.

Great news. I wasn't really worried,as I thought he would be in as the log jam of first rounders not signed broke, as the start of N.F.L camps drew close.

I might be way off base, but I thought/expected Essex to be competing for the right tackle position...

I always felt that Hartwig held his own pretty well (except that safety in SB XLIII) . It was Sean Mahan before him that was practically a welcome mat before sacking Big Ben. I don't think I'll ever see someone get manhandled as easily and badly as Sean Mahan again. I swear some of those November and December winds at Heinz field knocked Mahan over
