Fans gives Ben Roethlisberger a big ovation

LATROBE, Pa. -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger admits he was nervous. The two-time Super Bowl champion didn't know what type of reception he would get from Steeler Nation following his second off-the-field controversy in less than a year.

[IMGL]http://i30.tinypic.com/2m30dx0.jpg[/IMGL]Would "Big Ben" be heckled? Would he face boos? Would Roethlisberger have to keep a stern game face through critical comments as we walked onto the practice field?

It turns out Roethlisberger's reception was the exact opposite. On Saturday, Steeler Nation welcomed its quarterback with open arms as Roethlisberger received a loud ovation on the first day of training camp.

The response surprised Roethlisberger and brought a big smile to his face. Walking next to Hines Ward, Roethlisberger gave high fives to those in Steeler Nation, and it was clear the ovation lifted his spirits.

"It's neat to hear everybody cheering and seeing my jersey," Roethlisberger said. "It was a lot of encouragement."

Roethlisberger played on the first team Saturday morning but rotated with Byron Leftwich with the starters in the afternoon. The coaching staff says there will be no set rotation as it deals with a difficult situation of Roethlisberger serving a conditional six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

With the initial day of practice out of the way, Roethlisberger hopes he can move forward. Everyone knows what he can do on the football field -- and those skills were apparent again Saturday -- but Roethlisberger also says he's working hard to become a better person off the field.

Roethlisberger's press conference Saturday seemed genuine and contrite. He answered a variety of questions openly and honestly. Roethlisberger also dedicated a good amount of time after practice signing autographs with many of the same fans that gave him a healthy welcome back to the field.

As far as the quarterback rotation this summer, it's anybody's guess. Roethlisberger is fine with that.

"I'm up for whatever they want," Roethlisberger said. "I'm helping any and all of the quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, running backs. Byron and I are communicating a lot about different things we see out there ... Whatever rotation they want me to do, Id run the scout team if they want me to. It wouldn't matter."

Overall, it was a good start to training camp for the embattled quarterback. The Steelers and Roethlisberger are in a tough spot, but both appear to be doing all the right things to try to move on from this unusual situation.

"I hope that we can get past this, get on the football field and win championships," Roethlisberger said. "That's always my goal, and that's not going to change. I want to get out there, and I want to win a championship this year. That's my ultimate goal."

Inside the ropes: Big Ben is on target

By Mark Kaboly, MCKEESPORT DAILY NEWS

Ben Roethlisberger directed the first-team offense during a two-minute drill and was nearly flawless Sunday at St. Vincent College.

Roethlisberger completed 5-of-7 passes for 58 yards in a span of 90 seconds and tossed a 16-yard touchdown to Heath Miller on a third down.

Byron Leftwich wasn't as successful with the second team. Leftwich completed just 2-of-7 passes and threw four consecutive incomplete passes to end the drill. One of those passes was dropped by rookie Antonio Brown.

"Backs on 'backers" is one of coach Mike Tomlin's favorite drills. Tomlin wanted to see how much his rookie linebackers enjoyed the drill, too.

Jason Worilds and Thaddeus Gibson took a hefty number of reps during the drill, winning much more than they lost.

Worilds beat each one of the most frequently used backs in the drill at least once in Justin Vincent, Isaac Redman and Demetrius Taylor. Tight end David Johnson got the best of Worilds once.

At one point, Tomlin yelled out "Let's see if anybody can block 97."

Gibson was just as intense. He was successful against Johnson, Rashard Mendenall and Frank Summers, while he was stood up once by Redman.

"If you are a linebacker and you are shy, you usually have a problem, and I don't think he has that problem," Tomlin said of Gibson.

LaMarr Woodley may not have a new contract yet, but showed million-dollar skills yesterday. Going up against newly acquired right tackle Flozell Adams during one-on-ones, Woodley faked a speed rush and spun to the inside right around Adams for a sack.

Defensive lineman Ziggy Hood continued to flash early in camp as he used a spin move to get around right tackle Jonathan Scott during lineman drills.

Leftwich took 19 snaps, Roethlisberger 18, Dennis Dixon 10 and Charlie Batch zero during the three team sessions of 11-on-11, including the two-minute drill.

A day after fumbling 30 yards down the field, Mendenhall was at it again. Mendenhall fumbled for the second consecutive practice when the ball was ripped out of his hands near the sidelines of a running play during 11-on-11 team drills.

Dennis Dixon was practicing holding for field goals.
