I don't understand bringing him back and not at least giving him a start or 3. Jones is struggling and could use a day off.

I agree. The reason why he was called up was to be a back-up first baseman. If he keeps this up, he could be the starting first baseman. I always liked Clement's power, but he hasn't been consistent. They should give him a start tomorrow and give Jones a day off. I want to see what he can do.

This is Vintage Russell. Sit him on the bench a while and cool him off. Once he's cooled down, then you play him for a stretch. If he has a good game, park his butt on the bench again. Rinse, repeat.

Don't get me wrong, 'cause I do NOT like the way Russell runs a game, but I think he's handled the young players pretty well. You guys seem to forget how this guy struggled when he was up here before. I think he's being handled properly, and I bet he gets a start soon....

Well, it was sort of the same thing with Pearce. Pearce was hot in Indy, got recalled and sat on the bench. Clement struggled mightly and Russell ran him out there night after night at the beginning of the year. On several occasions, Clement had a good game at the plate and Russell would sit him on the bench the next game. I recall him doing this to other players as well. I think he gets set in his predetermined plans of who's gonna play when and doesn't have the sense to change them to accommodate a big game. I remember this happening on multiple occasions last season as well.

Tabata was out of the lineup today. This was a chance to play Clement at first and either sit Young or Jones.

If I recall right, the same thing happened with Milledge. When he was struggling early on he played pretty much everyday (which wasn't a bad thing because they needed to see what they had.) but when Milledge started to hit,Russell started platooning him with Church.

They should have sat Jones today since it was an early game following a night game and given Clement a chance.

However, it is true that there are inevitably some players who are better bench players than starters.

Jones has had exactly 1 game off since he's been here.

The Pirates are in kind of a weird spot right now where I see a ton of players as completely interchangeable. I really couldn't tell you which two players would produce the best at 1B and RF between Milledge, Moss, Bowker, Clement, and even Jones. At some point it would be nice if they had even an average 1B bat, but I'm not sure which one of those guys would provide it. Having no one to hit like he belongs at that position leaves you at a huge disadvantage.
