Default Kelly, Notre Dame talking big

I'm not waiting 'til after the first year to implement the things that need to be here for the long-term," Kelly said. "This is all about getting this program nationally in the top echelon immediately and then continue to work on that every single day.

"So there's nothing that we're holding back. We're going at it right away and expect to continue that each and every year."

Hopefully he can back it up with some wins. Got my Pitt/ ND tickets today...I can't wait.
    Wake up the echoes.

It will be interesting to see how Kelly fares at ND. Lately, it seems as if ND is a place where good coaches go to become mortal again. It's hard for me to believe that Weis, Willingham, Davies, etc. were all bad coaches. Why were they hired in the first place?

IMO, ND will win when the school's administration makes a commitment to winning (other than hiring and firing coaches!) They just let go of a coach who was an ND graduate, a multiple Super Bowl winner and an offensive-minded genius. I'm not sure you can find a coach with a much better pedigree than that.

Brian Kelly has won at schools that were commited to winning football games. High academic standards were not paramount. It's not going to be that way (for now, anyway) at ND. He's not going to be able to bring in Junior College transfers to turn the program around. FTR, Mark Dantonio turned UC's football program around, not Brian Kelly. Dantonio was able to do it because of the connections he made as an assistant at Ohio State. Kelly maintained what Dantonio started but was aided greatly by Miami (FL) and BC leaving the Big East. The Big East is no longer a "great" football conference. It has a few good teams every year, but that's it. Rich Rodriguez was a good coach in the Big East, but so far hasn't proven he can do it at the next level.

Don't be surprised if it's another new coach.... same results. I think Kelly can get ND to be better than a .500 team, but unless they ease up on the academic standards (which they won't), they'll have a tough time competing for a national championship.
