That's amazing and very surprising. JR should be next.

This would seem to be a prelude to JR's firing. Just observing from the outside, the mix of personalities on the coaching staff didn't work. We have a manager who doesn't project an image of being in charge and in control. Then there was a bench coach in Varsho with a domineering personality who wanted to be in charge and a quirky guy like Kerrigan as the pitching coach. It just didn't work.

I think I am more surprised about Varsho. I almost expected JR to be, and Varsho to be interim.

It's funny though how the "prize coached" (Kerrigan), can't seem to do well unless they have really good talent to work with.

@TheConfluence @northsidenotch Some talk that Kerrigan's handling of Lincoln cost him, plus talk that he wasn't gonna be back next yr.

kind of odd timing after a pretty good win, but you knew it was coming sometime.

This is really surprising to me. I can easily see changes being made after the season, but why now? Are things between these coaches really that bad? If they are, you'd think we'd have heard or seen something before now.
WHo's responsible for running the bases? Is that Varsho? Because if it is, then Milledge's getting thrown out at 3rd on a GO to SS must have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.

Honestly though, this is really surprising.

could be that they figured lets fire them while the team is up instead of when the team is down.

I know aloy of you don't like Smizik, but there're some interesting quotes here.

    Pirates fire Kerrigan, Varsho
    By Bob Smizik | Sunday, 9:50 a.m.

In a move peculiar in its timing -- coming less than 12 hours after a celebrated win -- the Pirates this morning fired pitching coach Joe Kerrigan and bench coach Gary Varsho.

Ray Searage, Kerrigan's assistant, will take over as pitching coach. Minor league field coordinator Jeff Bannister will assume Varsho's role.

[HIGH-LIGHT]In a news release, general manager Neal Huntington said, ``“Both Gary and Joe are quality baseball men who have worked hard during their time with the organization. However, JR (manager John Russell) felt strongly, and I agreed, that they were no longer the right fit for our staff and a change at this time was in the best interests of the club.”[/HIGH-LIGHT]

[HIGH-LIGHT]At a subsequent news conference, Russell said the decision was his. ``I made the call,'' he said. ``It was a very gut-wrenching decision. There are some issues I've been working through for quite some time now that could not be resolved in a way I felt would be for the betterment of this organization. [/HIGH-LIGHT]

[HIGH-LIGHT]``I respect both men greatly. I lost two friends today. That's tough to deal with. But my main focus is this team, this organization, and I felt moving forward that this was the time to do this. With two months left in the season, I wanted to accomplish something this year moving into this year."[/HIGH-LIGHT]

The starting pitching has been a mess under Kerrigan. The Pirates had the second worst earned run average in the National League. Their starters had the worst ERA by more than half a run. Last month Huntington made a comment that reflected badly on Kerrigan concerning prized prospect Brad Lincoln, who pitched poorly after being called up to the Pirates this season and had to be demoted back to the minors.

Kerrigan's hire was widely hailed. He had previously served as pitching coach with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies and as manager of the Red Sox. But the staff ERA was 14th in the National League last yearbefore falling to 15th this year.

There is no explanation for Varsho's firing. He had worked previously with Russell in the Philadelphia Phillies organization and was an original hire on Russell's staff in 2008. Kerrigan was hired before the 2009 season. Varsho was a key reserve on the Pirates 1991 and 1992 divsion championship teams and had been a successful minor-league manager.

Searage joined the Pirates this season after working in their organization as a pitching coach for seven years. He had not worked as a pitching coach on the MLB level until this season. Bannister is in his 25th season with the Pirates organization and is a well-respected member of it

Listening to the "Neil Huntington Show" on 104.7FM and it sounded like to me that Russell and Varsho really disliked each other. It also sounded like Kerrigan had basically retired on the job. Neil was also very adamant to make it clear that JR fired them and Neil okayed it. Really shows a lot of confidence in JR by Huntington, IMHO and realy clears the way for JR to return.

I was reading the comments on the Smizik blog.

Why the hell do people ***** about accountability all the time, then when the Pirates do make some kind of move that looks like that ... it is questioned.

For the love of god... people are ****ing amazing.
