    Default Interesting Lineup: Pirates-Astros 8-14

    From Dejan:

    "Pirates:

    1. Andrew McCutchen, CF
    2. Garrett Jones, RF former No. 4
    3. Jose Tabata, LF former No. 2
    4. Pedro Alvarez, 3B former No. 5
    5. Neil Walker, 2B former No. 2
    6. Ryan Doumit, C
    7. Jeff Clement, 1B
    8. Argenis Diaz, SS
    9. Maholm, P

....Russell said. "I didn't come in today and pull it out of a hat. Donnie and Banny and I sat down and talked about it. The five guys are still the five guys" -- meaning McCutchen, Tabata, Walker, Jones and Alvarez -- "just in a different order. We'll see. We kind of like it. ..."

It's like JR is spreading out the guys hitting instead of batrting them back to back (Walker and Tabata) with jones, Pedro in between as power and Cutch leading off of course...

It'll be interesting especially in approaches to Pedro with Walker as well as is batting 5th

I guess Jones moves OK in to be in the second spot. The thing I most like about this is having Walker, who is swinging a bat as well as anyone, is now protecting Pedro. Maybe Pedro gets a little better pitch to look at.

Just want everyone to remember that if Walker's production drops, there's some help from his new lineup spot.

Protecting Pedro was the first thing I thought of as well. This lineup seems designed to do just that.

wow.. i had no idea Garrett Jones was hitting .258. .319 OBP usually isn't somethjing you want #2 in the lineup but Garrett really appears to be slumping. his July and August numbers are terrible. maybe this moves takes some middle of the lineup pressure off of him?

I think I would've left the top two spots alone and Jones, Alvarez, Walker. I think Jones batting behind Tabata gets him more fastballs if the top two can get on base and use their speed. Not crazy about dropping Walker, but if it gets Alvarez better pitches to hit so be it.

One good thing about being this low in the standings,it gives you the chance to experiment.

This is an important game tonight for Clement who the plan to use sparingly. A big game may keep him in the lineup. An 0-fer will park him on the bench for a while. Clement playing sparingly the rest of the season makes him likely to lose his spot on the 40-man this off season, IMO.

2-4. K'd twice but that doesn't matter. an out is an out unless it's a sac. He needs to do more of that ..,. HIT . The power is there, he's got 20+ raw power in there kid just can't hit as poorly as he has

Pedro goes 0-4 with 4 K's. So much for getting him better pitches to look at with Walker behind him now.

Player News (last updated: August 14, 2010)
News: Alvarez struck out four times in four at-bats Saturday night.
Spin: He was swinging through Bud Norris fastballs all night, surprising in that Norris is a righthander. On a night in which Pittsburgh reshuffled the meat of its batting order, batters No. 2 through No. 5 struck out 10 times.

I believe that's 7 K's in has last 10 AB. Still work in progress, I guess.

I swear Russell just throws **** out in the lineup and hope it sticks. Its like on the job training with this guy. Somebody else is getting fired soon, i bet and it may be Russell, contract or not.

I don't really mind this lineup at all. It's basically what they stuck with today, but Milledge and Snyder are in there against the lefty. I don't think I'm a big fan of Jones at 2, though. Tabata-McCutchen should probably stay the 1-2. Jones doesn't get on base often enough to hit in the 2 spot. He had a monster first month in the walk department, then just kind of quit doing it at all.

    Nope.

Really I think Batting Jones 4th and the lineup of : Cutch, Tabata, Walker, Jones, Pedro was best. The one thing that Jones has done well this year consistently is hit with runners in scoring position and he's most useful ahead of Tabata, Cutch and Walker in the lineup. His Ba improves as guys move up in bases too so guys that can hit the XBH and steal bags is good for him.

I don't know if he throws stuff to see if it sticks, but I think Russell overthinks certain situations that doesn't require it and lays back in situations that requires more of his involvement.

Isn't it Russell's job to get the best fit out of his lineup.

Jones' at no. 2. Yeah, Cutch gets on base, he's on an island. Forget stealing a base, forget hit and run, lets increase our double play changes cause we know Jones isn't the most fleet of foot. Seems to me either Tabata or Walker's more suited for those roles.

Why, if Russell wants Pedro batting 4th doesn't he just flip him and Garrett?
