Lewis didn't score with Tomlin on or off the field
    By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Monday, August 30, 2010

DENVER A bad night Sunday got worse for cornerback Keenan Lewis as the Steelers filed into the visiting locker room at Invesco Field following a 34-17 loss to the Broncos.

[HIGH-LIGHT]Lewis, who got benched in the second quarter after picking up two personal foul penalties, punched a sign that was encased in glass. The glass shattered and many of the players had to walk by a guard telling them to watch their step and Tomlin making it very clear why there was broken glass outside of the Steelers' locker room.

"That's what you call young and dumb right there," Tomlin said to the players that passed him. "Watch your step. No. (23) is playing bad and doing stupid stuff as well."[/HIGH-LIGHT]

Lewis started at the cornerback spot opposite Ike Taylor in place of Bryant McFadden, who didn't play because of an arm injury.

Lewis, who appeared to be pushing McFadden for the starting job gave up an 18-yard catch to Eddie Royal on the second play of the game and then tackled the Broncos wide receiver out of bounds.

"The first (unnecessary roughness penalty) I didn't know he was out of bounds," Lewis said. "The second one, that was my fault."

Lewis got flagged in the second quarter for unnecessary roughness after tackling Bronces wide receiver Brandon Lloyd.

Gay promptly replaced Lewis at cornerback, and after the game Tomlin said of the latter, "He stunk it up."

[HIGH-LIGHT]The 6-foot, 208-pounder Lewis didn't do anything to help himself after the game as Tomlin was livid when he saw the broken glass outside of the Steelers' locker room.[/HIGH-LIGHT]

[HIGH-LIGHT]Lewis said he meant to punch the wall, not the sign.[/HIGH-LIGHT]

"He had a tough night," said Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace, who is Lewis' best friend. "That's why I told him we have next week. Shake it off, bounce back. We all make mistakes. Hopefully he can get back to the Keenan I know."

Horse manure. He should be ***** slapping Lewis across the head and asking him "What the **** is the matter with you? Are you trying to blow millions of dollar?"

His antics, as well as his play, were inexcusable.

Not that it made it right but, I did think I saw the player shove his hand in Lews's face before Lewis got upset with him.

I bet players breaking **** has been going on since the beginning of the sport. Still, it is really undisciplined.

Who? I am assuming you mean Lewis... I wouldn't get rid of him. He had a really bad day. A lot of people had a bad day. Guy has shown some promise otherwise. We don't exactly have a ton of talent at CB and who knows if Ike will be with us past this year. I hope cooler heads prevail and he everyone can push past it.

I don't care that he punched a sign encased with glass. It may be stupid and undisciplined but is shows that he wants to be a starter, so at least the guy cares about being out there. A bigger concern, IMO, is the fact that he looked pretty lost out there and not really that athletic, either.

I'm starting to think that a big problem with the CB's on this team is the coaching and possibly even the defensive scheme. Ray Horton, as far as I can tell, is a horrible DB coach. Why is it that all of our CB's have struggled in coverage recently? Even Taylor had a down year last year, IMO.

Also, why isn't Joe Burnett not getting more of a chance to prove himself out there? He's looked pretty solid in the time that has been given to him.

Thank you for bringing up one of my biggest "pet peeves", because I agree completely...

Look at the product he put on the field when he was with the Lions ('02-'03), Bengals ('97-'01), and Redskins ('94-'96)... This squad with the Steelers is showing the same signs that those teams did... Our secondary has lacked the basic fundamentals of tackling and "ball hawking" for the last few years (with a very few personal exceptions)... Is it a coincidence?... Sorry, but I don't think so.

Once again proving my take on Tomlin. He can't judge talent (players or coaches). Just one reason he is in way over his head.

He had to or he would not have been hired. No doubt if he had a choice, he would have fired LeBeau and hired Joe Posnanski instead.
