    Default Same old special teams

The special teams to me look to be doing worse. Our returners look confused and our coverage looks like they are not trying. I don't know how true it is but the mail man today told me he heard Jeff Reed say, his kickoffs are not the problem. He also said Reed made the comment, " half of the special team players don't even want to play on special teams. "

Another troubling aspect of the special teams is the lack of lanes for returners. It seems that the Steelers consistently do a poor job setting up punt returns, and there wasn't much to work with on KO returns, either.

Agreed... You know, I have always thought that the special teams aspect of the game should be easier to develop than other things such as offensive schemes and what not. But man, our special teams always seem to reach new levels of sucktitude each season... I just don't get it.

They were talking on the fan a couple of minutes ago about Reed claiming there is nothing wrong with his kickoffs. I wonder if some young kicker that looks good during preseason and doesn't make a team would be invited to try out with our team ?

Why do they always say "It's a rookie mistake"? Hell that's something you're taught in Pop Warner. Certainly by the time you get to college, it should be tatooed on the brain.

As far as last night, I still think our ST play sucks. On every punt that I can remember, there was a wall of defenders staring the receiver down, when there should be a blocker between the receiver and the defender. Maybe it's TV coverage which never shows anything but the ball; however, I think our attempts to block all the way up at the line of scrimmage instead of back where the ball is in play is silly. Makes no difference who is returning and you can't say one is better than the other when defenders have him surrounded.
Posted this on another thread but fits here too.

Judging strictly on last nights performance, we can all see that nothing has changed. I forgot the name of the Donkos kick returner but whatever his name may be, he did just about whatever he wanted. Horrible ST performance last night and sadly it is nothing new. It will in all probability cost a few games this season if they don't improve.

Until last night, I thought that ST had improved a little. Ah well, just another component...

That's what I thought too. Were the first two pre-season games a sign of improvement or was last night more indicative of what we have to look forward to? Or was last night just one of those nights where the entire team just had a bad night?

I'm not prepared to jump off an incline face first onto a thumbtack yet.

At least with Sepulveda, we know he will tackle somebody and can slow down a returner even a fast , elusive guy like the Donkos kr.....I don't know if that is such a good thing to brag about though....as it means the rest of the st may suck. lol

Your mailman's quote came directly from Reed, in a PG or Trib story right before the Broncos game, while defending his own kicking performance.

But, he also called himself a "hang time kicker," which seldom see.
