First five player cuts due by 5 p.m. today
    Tuesday, August 31, 2010
    By Bob Dvorchak, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Five cuts must be made by 5 p.m. today for the Steelers to get down to the 75-player limit. While coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that nobody had been cut yet, poor performances in the loss Sunday night to the Denver Broncos likely will make the decisions easier.

The personnel moves come as the Steelers race to the final preseason game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at home against the Carolina Panthers.

"We judge on the complete body of work," said Tomlin, noting that evaluations are made on what players did at training camp, in preseason games and practices.

That said, the remaining hopefuls have one more chance to convince coaches that they are worthy of a roster spot. The cutdown to a maximum of 53 players will be Saturday.

"We've got a short week," Tomlin said. "This is a big game for a lot of men, not just on our team but around the league."

Generally speaking, Tomlin said his starters will play Thursday, but he did not say for how long or in what order because he had not gone over those details with his staff.

After arriving from Denver in the wee hours, Tomlin studied film from the 34-17 loss and met with the media at 1 p.m. Asked if he had slept, the coach said, "I'll sleep later."

    [HIGH-LIGHT]A few bright spots[/HIGH-LIGHT]

Sifting through the rubble of the loss to Denver, Tomlin said rookie center Maurkice Pouncey "represented himself well" against nose tackle Jamal Williams but had to adjust to working on a silent snap count in a hostile environment.

He also was pleased with what he saw from linebacker Lawrence Timmons and rookie running back Jonathon Dwyer, who had been hampered by a shoulder injury. But overall, the Steelers left a lot to be desired in their third preseason game, which is often viewed as the best tune-up for the regular season.

"We took a step back. You shoot yourself in the foot, you're going to lose football games," Tomlin said. "Where there's pain, there's growth, hopefully. That's what the preseason is for."

    [HIGH-LIGHT]Penalties enrage Tomlin[/HIGH-LIGHT]

Tomlin was especially incensed at the 93 yards in penalties on 11 fouls called against the Steelers, including an unsportsmanlike-conduct call on cornerback Keenan Lewis.

"Those types of things are out of bounds for us if we want to be a quality football team," Tomlin said. "I'd rather have to say 'whoa' than 'sic 'em,' but we have to say whoa."

    [HIGH-LIGHT]Hair worth a million[/HIGH-LIGHT]

The long, flowing black hair that tumbles out of Troy Polamalu's helmet and down his back has been insured for $1 million by Head and Shoulders, the shampoo brand that is endorsed by the Steelers safety. The insurance was obtained through Lloyd's of London.

I'm wondering how high the Steelers are on some of the younger wr's......What is Tomlin's philosophy on older players versus younger talent?

    Bires: Sour Batch for Charlie

By: Mike Bires Beaver County Times
    Monday August 30, 2010 11:50 PM

The Steelers’ coaches say they have some tough decisions to make when finalizing their opening day roster. But really, the cuts won’t be that difficult (Hint: Charlie Batch should be among them).

Certainly, trimming five players today for the first mandatory cut-down date will be a breeze.

And on Saturday when the roster must be reduced to 53, those cuts shouldn’t be that hard either.

Here’s Times football writer Mike Bires’ guess on what the roster will look like Sept. 12 when the Steelers open the season against the Atlanta Falcons.

    QUARTERBACKS (3)

Ben Roethlisberger, Byron Leftwich, Dennis Dixon

Sorry, Charlie Batch. You may stick around while Roethglisberger sits out on suspension. But when he returns, the Steelers won’t need four QBs.

    RUNNING BACKS (4)

Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore, Isaac Redman, Frank Summers

For the past two years, Redman has been a preseason sensation. He was cut last year, but this time he sticks. Rookie Jonathan Dwyer looked good in Denver, but it’s too little too late for the former Georgia Tech star who missed several camp practices due to injury.

    WIDE RECEIVERS (6)

Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Antwaan Randle El, Arnaz Battle, Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders

With Brown and Sanders, a pair of rookies, flashing potential in the passing game and kick-return game, they’re keepers. That means Stefan Logan loses his job as the kick return specialist. Battle stays because he’s an experienced veteran who’s also solid on special teams.

    TIGHT ENDS (3)

Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, David Johnson

Johnson holds off Sean McHugh, who missed last season with a knee injury after playing on the Super Bowl team two seasons ago.

    OFFENSIVE LINE (9)

Max Starks, Flozell Adams, Chris Kemoeatu, Trai Essex, Maurkice Pouncey, Doug Legursky, Jonathan Scott, Ramon Foster, Tony Hills

There’s no sense keeping Justin Hartwig, the starting center the past two years. With Pouncey looking so good so fast, there’s no need to pay Hartwig $2.080 million to be a backup. Hills, who hasn’t played in his first two years with the Steelers, came on strong late in camp and saved his job.

    DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Brett Keisel, Ziggy Hood, Chris Hoke, Nick Eason and Doug Worthington

In a toss-up decision, Worthington makes the roster instead of Ra’Shon “Sunny” Harris, who’s had a lackluster preseason.

    LINEBACKERS (8)

James Harrison, James Farrior, Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley, Larry Foote, Jason Worilds, Patrick Bailey, Keyaron Fox

OK, so there are some tough cuts here. But perhaps fourth-round pick Thaddeus Gibson and fifth-round pick Stevenson Sylvester can make the practice squad. I’d keep Bailey because he’s been a strong special teams player.

    DEFENSIVE BACKS (10)

Ike Taylor, Bryant McFadden, Troy Polamalu, Ryan Clark, McFadden, Keenan Lewis, Joe Burnett, Will Allen, Ryan Mundy, William Gay and Anthony Madison

Madison, a cornerback, will never play on defense. But he’s just so good on special teams. So, he stays.

    SPECIALISTS (3)

Jeff Reed, Daniel Sepulveda, Matt Stewart

Why would the Steelers bring in Stewart so late in the preseason? It could only mean that Stewart, who was signed on Aug. 23, will replace Greg Warren as the long snapper.

Thank you. now I have a better grasp as to what is going on. I haven't been up to date this preseason because they took away Stan Savran's Sportsbeat.

That's reasonable stuff. The Stillers could pick up a role player, after some cuts, also.

My beloved Hines Ward is getting long in the tooth. One more year at most.

Hartwig should go, but I really feel for the guy. He gave good game.

I don't think we are that good this year. Hope I'm wrong!

Worried about losing Dwyer and wondering about the Bengal cut, Bryant.

If the D'line stays healthy, the team stays healthy.................ya heard it here. They can bring it!

    I thinks they're tired of Reed also......................Sylvestor!?

    Absolutely no chance, IMO.

Brown and Sanders have shown talent but it's obvious they have some learning to do.

If any vet gets cut it's Battle but I doubt that too.

Yeah, Battle plays KO coverage and is considered a special teams gem. I believe he caught 4 passes for SF last season, but was kept on the team for his ST play.

I've always liked ARE even back in the day when some Steelers' fans were getting on him for running side to side rather than up the field on returns...so I want him to be on the team but the play calling so far when he touches the ball has been stale. I mean everyone knows what's going to happen when El is in the game. I have seen two reverses to El and both of them resulted in losses.
