    Default Nyjer Morgan's ongoing meltdown

What a crazy week it's been for Nyjer Morgan:

It all started last Sunday when Nyjer got into it with some fans at Citizens Bank Park. Apparently they had been yelling back and forth during an inning and things got pretty heated. At the end of the inning Nyjer ended up with the ball. He yelled something to the fans, faked like he was throwing the ball, then actually did throw the ball after the camera cut away. It's not entirely clear how hard he threw it or what his intentions were, but he ended up pegging a different fan in the head and was handed a 7 game suspension by the league. He appealed the suspension.

Fast forward to Saturday in St. Louis. The Nationals have the bases loaded against the Cardinals with Morgan on first. The batter hits a double to the gap and Morgan should score easily. Albert Pujols didn't have the ball, but pump faked toward the plate, so Nyjer decided he needed to plow over the catcher. The problem was the ball was just reaching the infield and the catcher wasn't blocking the plate at all. He was actually a step in front of the plate and to the first base side. Nyjer bowled him over anyway and missed home plate entirely. He ended up being touched by a teammate and called out for contacting another player while still a live runner. The next day Nyjer was held out of the lineup to avoid any potential trouble after the Cardinals had clearly taken offense. Some partially blamed the move on Nyjer being moved from leadoff to the 8 hole.

Nyjer takes Sunday off and manages to make it through the Monday game without incident. The yesterday happened. With Morgan on second base in the 10th inning of a 0-0 tie the Marlins fielded a slowly hit grounder at second and got a force there. There was no chance at a double play, and Hanley Ramirez turned to see that Morgan had rounded third. Hanley threw home and Nyjer threw a body check at the catcher Brett Hayes about as hard as you'll see a catcher hit. It was a relatively clean play all things considered, but the consensus seemed to be that Morgan would have been safe had he slid rather than going for the hit. Given the previous incident just a few days prior, some of the Marlins thought it was a questionable play. Hayes ended up with a dislocated shoulder and is likely out for the year. TV cameras caught Morgan cursing out some fans in center again when he went back out to the field.

Today Morgan's not only in the lineup, but back in the leadoff spot. Most are expecting early fireworks, but Volstad decides to pitch to Morgan and strikes him out to open the game. Morgan comes up again in the second with runners on second and third. Volstad pitches to him again and Morgan hits a sac fly. By the time Morgan comes up for his third plate appearance it's an 11 run game. Volstad wastes no time and hits Morgan with the first pitch. He seemed go to first without much of a problem. Early in the next AB Morgan takes off for second and goes in with a very hard slide, taking out a Marlin defender. Two pitches later he takes off for third and goes in just as hard. The batter popped up to shallow center, and the second baseman made the catch, but in turning to try to hold Morgan he fell and dislocated his wrist. Morgan scored.

The Marlins were pretty upset with the whole sequence as stealing the bases in an 11 run game is kind of frown on to begin with, and the way he went about it was pretty questionable. The fact that it all led to them losing another player didn't help matters at all. Next time up the first pitch from Volstad goes behind Morgan and Nyjer immediately takes off for the mound and actually takes a hop while throwing a punch at Volstad. Volstad turns him around and he runs directly into a charging clothesline from Gaby Sanchez, WWE style. Volstad pounces on him, the benches clear, and there's all kinds of chaos on the field, including a near manager fight. Morgan emerges form the pile, his shirt nearly torn off, raising his arms, pounding his chest, and again mouthing off at everyone he sees.

I thought Lastings Milledge was the one with the attitude problem...

He's out of control. He should get the rest of the year off for that garbage.

It's always cool to taunt the crowd after you get leveled like that.

I haven't been following Morgan that much, save to note that he's having a down season.

But, I noticed that he is one of a few Nats players who are part of new DC Metro Bus art, with a "Nymo" action picture--about 6 feet tall--adorning some of the local public transit.

When you have to give a guy a day off for his own safety, he has issues. If I was MLB, I'd be having his appeal hearing soon. Regardless of what happens, you absolutely cannot throw a baseball at fans. You have to be able to ignore them once you're on the field. When they see they've gotten to you, it will get 10 times worse.

I wonder if people in Pittsburgh are still upset he is gone?

I mean - he was a cornerstone and all.

In fact, is there really ANYBODY we traded, that we'd love to have back, right now?

I don't really see anyone gone setting the world on fire. Ya, maybe a spike when they left, but nothing consistent

Morgan acted really dumb in this situation. He allowed his temper to get the best of him.

Well, Jose Bautista, at least this year, would be nice to have. Imagine a right-hand hitting power bat? But I bet he'll be back ot normal next year....

Remember when everyone complained that we were getting the problem child - Lastings Milledge in that trade?

We ended up getting the players that despite the stats, tries hard, runs out plays and has been pretty model player outyside of having to deal with a hard headed ******bag like Gary Varsho ...

the Nats end up getting the problem kid who is pretty much below average at everything he does besides attempted steals

I'm cool with Morgan charging the mound and all that but the other **** taking all UFC and gesturing to the crowd is where he went wrong.
