UNIVERSITY PARK — Rob Bolden did more than rewrite the history books today when he became the first freshman to start at quarterback for Penn State coach Joe Paterno in 18 years.

He led the Nittany Lions to a dominant 44-14 opening-day victory against outclasssed Youngstown State before a crowd of 101,213 at Beaver Stadium.

Bolden completed 20 of 29 passes for 239 yards, one interception and two touchdowns to fifth-year senior wide receiver Brett Brackett. Bolden played into the fourth quarter before he was replaced by sophomore Kevin Newsome with 10:07 left in the game and Penn State leading, 37-7.

In his first series, Newsome led the Nittany Lions on a six-play, 56-yard touchdown drive, scoring on a 1-yard sneak with 6:54 left. He did not attempt a pass.

Former walkon quarterback Matt McGloin finished up the game's final 40 seconds.

Penn State trailed, 7-6, until late in the second quarter when Brackett caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Bolden. Collin Wagner kicked field goals of 44, 49 and 48 yards to give Penn State a 16-7 lead at halftime.

Chaz Powell returned the opening kickoff of the second half 100 yards for a touchdown. Brackett scored on a 22-yard reception later in the third quarter and backup running back Stephfon Green added a 6-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.

I like his arma nd he definitely has some big time potential but some of those throws he got away with because it was YSU. Bama takes them the other way. Hopefully he's a quick learner.
