Mike Tomlin confirms Dennis Dixon will start

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 6, 2010 3:48 PM ET

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin won't drag out the drama any longer: He announced Dennis Dixon will start the team's season opener against the Falcons on Sunday.

Dixon took all the first team snaps at practice on Monday.

It was believed Charlie Batch might start, but perhaps the Steelers just tried to throw the Falcons off the scent for a few days.

The Steelers originally prepared Dixon for a specific package of plays that he was expected to run whiling backing up Byron Leftwich. Now they will have to expand those plans, while likely dialing back the team's passing game playbook and focusing on the run game.

Ben Roethlisberger tried to carry the Steelers on his back last year; now it's Troy Polamalu's turn.

Dixon will start for Steelers against Falcons

    By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Monday, September 6, 2010

Coach Mike Tomlin named Dennis Dixon the Steelers' starting quarterback for the regular season opener Sunday against the visiting Falcons.

The Steelers had planned to start Byron Leftwich for the four games that Ben Roethlisberger is suspended but Leftwich sprained his left knee last Thursday in the Steelers' final preseason contest.

Tomlin said he tabbed Dixon to start while Leftwich is out because of his strong play during the preseason. Durability concerns with Charlie Batch also factored into the decision to go with Dixon, Tomlin said.

"If that's how he felt he had to go with it," Batch said after practice. "I would love to be out there but right now I'm into the role I've always been and that's one snap away from being ready to go, and either way I'll be ready to go."

Dixon gives the Steelers' offense a different dimension since he is a dual-threat quarterback. He won over teammates last season in his only career start when he nearly led the Steelers to a win at Baltimore.

Save for one bad game in Denver, Dixon excelled during training camp and the preseason.

"This is every quarterback's dream, to get an opportunity to start in the National Football League," Dixon said. "I just want to be even keeled and (put) my team in the best situation."

    NOOOOOO!!!!

Well, let's hope for the best. I'm hoping this isn't another in a growing list of questionable decisions by Tomlin.

Dixon, just don't **** up too much on Sunday! That's all I'm hoping for. Just 1 INT and I'll be happy.

Big mistake going with Dixon, sounds like another wrong choice by Tomlin. Wonder if Dixon will have any kind of leash on him when he starts screwing things up ? I also wonder how many interceptions he will throw along with how many open receivers he will overlook before he starts running ?
People want to say we made the gamble with starting Ben as a rookie so why not Dixon but there is one big factor, Dixon is no number one pick and doesn't have half the talent Ben has.

If the Steelers would cut or trade Dixon, I wouldn't give his career in the NFL more than 2 or 3 seasons.

Another thing, why didn't Tomlin wait longer to annouce Dixon as the starter ? He could have at least allowed the falcons to wonder whom to game plan for.

Your right. Dixon is either a Steeler or out of the league. If we pull anything better then 1-3 record the first 4 games we should thank our lucky stars.

Remember who we are talking about that would make too much sense.

That's a good point, fezziwig. Regardless of whether you think Dixon is the right choice (I still don't understand how anyone can think that) why does Tomlin give the Falcons a whole week to prepare for him? I get the feeling that we're going to need all the help we can get. Maybe Dixon will surprise some, I definitely have serious doubts, though.
