Default Crosby Blasts Batting Practice Home Run at PNC Park

    By Jason Seidling
Former Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Sean Casey welcomed nine Penguins to batting practice today at PNC Park, and just like on the ice, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was the star on the diamond as well.

Joining Crosby on the North Shore were forwards Matt Cooke, Pascal Dupuis, Craig Adams, Mike Rupp, Chris Kunitz and Maxime Talbot, defenseman Paul Martin and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

Showing off the hands which helped him score a National Hockey League-leading 51 goals last season, Crosby, who played baseball until the age of 13, either hit or one-hopped the wall in right and right center field five times before launching a 370-foot home run deep into the seats just past the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field.

“I had a little bit of an edge because of I am a lefty,” Crosby said. “To be able to come out here was awesome and to be able to put one out was great.”

Pirates second baseman Neil Walker, a Pine-Richland graduate and huge Penguins fan, was impressed with Crosby’s blast.

“He obviously has some serious hand-eye coordination,” Walker said. “I think he would catch on pretty quickly. He is a natural athlete. That was quite a shot right there. That was all of 360-370 feet. That’s some serious strength there’s no doubt about that.”

We need to sign up Sid. Put him at short. He can play baseball after we win the Cup this year, say mid-June and be part of a World Series Championship. Who needs Deon Sanders or Bo Jackson anyway.

They'd just trade him for Kris Beech

I think something got mixed up this past spring and it was supposed to be Sidney Crosby, not Bobby Crosby going to the Pirates

The pictures are great. It looked like a pick up game you'd have at some random local community baseball field except that they got to do it at PNC Park. Pretty cool.

I was interested to see actually how many actually batted left handed. I know that lefty is the dominant shot in Hockey but didn't think it was because people were lefties. Looked like a lot of the left handed shot Pens players were batting left

It was said that you treat a hockey stick like you would a broom, you put yoru strong hand on top to get all the power and the weaker hand down low basically just to guide and aim, and that all the power comes from the hand on the top of the stick. I started playing ice hockey as a right shot also for like 2 years, then I did a switch to left after i heard about this, and my shot was harder, and after I got the accuracy down I found I was even more accurante. And to be honest, to hear Crosby say he is left handed and he shoots left, I was pretty surprised, because from what I understand, Canadians are brought up that if you write with your right hand you shoot left, if you write with your left hand you shoot right.

I dont quite get it either. I can't hit a baseball worth a **** left handed but that's how I can slap a puck from the point with something resembling accuracy when I was younger.

First hockey stick I was given was a lefty stick so I learned by default how to shoot that way. I shovel, rake, use a broom like a right handed shot. I bat righty

when i use a broom or shovel, i have my right hand on the top of it myself, that is why it made sense to me, but i hit right handed with a baseball bat, and swing golf right, i just was goin by what was said at a hockey clinic I was at

I think he just meant that he bats left. All the pics I've seen of him signing autographs, he's signing right-handed. Either that or he's just ambidextrous.
