I can play "Pull me under" and used to be able to do "Take the time" when I was younger. Be lucky to do half of it now without building my chops back up for prog metal.

This is pretty crazy though. although DT hasn't made an album ive dug since 2001, they always seemed like a band that wouldnt break up

just read the whole presser from Portnoy. Cant really blame him. I felt like although there were some good pieces to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance the band was getting really predictable and their "sound" was starting to sound the same. . Each of the first 4 albums stodd on their own legs (dream and day unite, images and words, awake, falling into infinity, Scenes from a memory)... but Inner turbulance seemed to be the start of something that sounded a lot like the previous album. Train of thought, octavarium, systematic chaos, black clouds all sound liek the same albums

Yeah, they pretty much hit rock bottom a few years ago.... although they were beginning to rebound.

When they stopped having to give in to record company demands that's when I felt they lost structure for albums and really veered heavily towards the full blown pro rock side. Sort of lost that ability to write a song first and then expand on it and instead wrote more arrangement based music and hoped to find a song in it.

I had to buy Images and Words on cassette twice back in the day because I wore the first one out completely

It's been a downhill slide for DT ever since Kevin Moore left the band in 1994!

Derek Sherinian wasnt bad on Falling Into Infinity. He was barely noticeable compared to most other DT albums since that was mroe of a raw/mainstream effort. He played nice piano on the ballads
