Hampton, Starks out for Titans game
September 17th, 2010

Nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) and left tackle Max Starks (ankle) will not play Sunday against the Titans in Nashville.

The Steelers did get some good news on the injury front this week as quarterback Bryon Leftwich has made enough strides in recovering from a sprained left knee that he will likely dress against the Titans.

Leftwich was a full participant in practice Friday, and the Steelers have listed him as probable on their injury report.

Dennis Dixon will start at quarterback but Leftwich offers additional insurance in case Dixon struggles or gets hurt in the Titans’ game.

Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (quadriceps) did not practice Thursday or Friday and is listed as doubtful for the 1 p.m. game. Outside linebacker Jason Worilds (shoulder) is also doubtful to play In Nashville.

Antonio Brown is expected to take Sanders’ place on the 45-man roster and also return kickoffs and punts.

Outside linebacker Thaddeus Gibson figures to take Worilds’ spot on the 45-man roster.

It remains to be seen what the Steelers will do at defensive line.

Coach Mike Tomlin prefers to dress six linemen for warm-weather games in September, and the forecast for Nashville Sunday has temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.

With Hampton out, the Steelers only have five defensive linemen. They could sign defensive tackle Steve McLendon from their practice squad but they would have to waive a player on their 53-man roster and risk losing him.
