    Conference Power Rankings: Week 3
    September, 20, 2010

Here are this week's Conference Power Rankings. The formula has substituted the AP poll for the coaches' poll, since USC isn't being ranked by the coaches' or Harris polls because of its probation. To evaluate any conference without considering all of its teams, especially one of its powers, would have been inappropriate.

    Conference Power Rankings

Conference AP Rank Computers Rank Final Rating
    SEC 1 1 98.3
    Big 12 4 2 89.2
    Pac-10 2 4 89.1
    Big Ten 3 3 88.9
    MWC 5 7 68.1
    WAC 6 8 50.6
    ACC 7 5 39.6
    Big East 8 6 31.0
    C-USA 9 9 16.3
    MAC 10 10 12.7
    Sun Belt 11 11 9.9
Of note, the Big 12, Pac-10 and Big Ten are in a virtual tie behind the SEC. The Iowa loss to Arizona helped bring the Pac-10 up from fourth and brought the Big Ten down from second. One good feature of this system is that interconference results between Top 25 schools will noticeably alter ratings the following week.

The WAC is still ahead of the ACC. A few bullet points why, comparing the top slots in each conference:

    • At No. 1, the Boise State Broncos have 1,333 AP voting points, while the Miami Hurricanes have 472.

    • At No. 2, the Nevada Wolf Pack have more AP voting points than the Florida State Seminoles.

    • At No. 3, the Fresno State Bulldogs have more AP voting points than the Clemson Tigers.

The ACC is clearly a deeper conference (as seen by their large computer rankings advantage), however, unless the ACC can get a school near the AP top 10 they will not overtake the WAC.

The Big East looks horrible... And a big game for Pitt Thursday night to boot...

... My Pac-10 seems to be looking a bit better than I expected, and they got a quality win over the Big-10 and Iowa this past week.

Yea... It'll be interesting to see how they perform now that they are entering conference play this week.

    Full chart on the link.

It was a good week for the ACC. The Miami Hurricanes continue to rise in the AP poll, racking up valuable points for their conference. NC State also jumped into the Top 25 of the AP poll. One more solid week for the ACC and they are in prime position to jump the WAC, which lost all of Fresno State’s AP points after its loss to Ole Miss.

The Big East is in freefall. The Mountain West has overtaken them in the computer rankings. The West Virginia Mountaineers are the only team receiving any AP points, and they dropped out of the top 25 following their loss to the LSU Tigers. The conference fell to 5-13 against all other FBS schools and 1-10 against other AQ schools. They are much closer to being overtaken by Conference USA than they are to catching any of the top seven conferences.

The Big 12 took a hit as well with the Texas Longhorns’ surprise home loss to the UCLA Bruins. They fell to fifth place in the AP poll, behind the Mountain West. They were close to overtaking the SEC in the computer rankings entering the week, but now are close to being overtaken for second by the Pac-10.
