And then there were two, apparently.

With the Steelers poised to pick from a trio of quarterbacks for Sunday's game in Tampa against the surprisingly undefeated Buccaneers, one of them could be unavailable.

Per a league source, an MRI revealed that Dennis Dixon has a tear in the lateral meniscus of his left knee. Three years ago, he tore an ACL in the same knee.

The source says that Dixon will be getting a second opinion on Tuesday and determining the next steps on Wednesday.

That possibly leaves Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich as the options for Sunday, if Dixon can't play.

A meniscus tear isn't an automatic surgery. So it'll be interesting to see what happens.

To give it to you all in lay folks talk, he tore the cartilage on the outside of his left knee.

I actually don't care to see him back anytime soon, personally...

Leftwich and Batch hopefully will be enough to get through the next two weeks until Ben's return, and at that point, I would be perfectly content with Leftwich as the backup for the remainder of the season... Sorry, I'm just not a Dixon fan, and don't think we really need him too much.

Steelers quarterback Dennis Dixon tore his lateral meniscus cartilage, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Dixon will get a second opinion this week, but if the initial diagnosis stands Dixon will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and miss at least three weeks.

By then, Ben Roethlisberger's four-game suspension will be over and he will return as the Steelers' starting quarterback.

With Dixon out, the Steelers re-sign quarterback Byron Leftwich two days after they released him to create a roster spot for a defensive lineman.

Leftwich, who may start Sunday's game at Tampa Bay, was let go Saturday in a procedural move so Steve McLendon could be activated for the Tennessee game. McLendon had a fumble recovery during the Steelers' 19-11 victory, but was released Monday so Leftwich could return.

Leftwich was expected to start throughout quarterback Roethlisberger's suspension, only to his sprain his left knee in the Steelers' final preseason game Sept. 2. He hasn't played since.

ESPN also just reported that he's gonna get a 2nd opinion, but is likely sidelined at least 3 weeks...

I agree. The only way Dixon was not going to see the field was if he got hurt. This is actually a blessing in disguise because if I had to rate our backup QB's he would be at the bottom of the list. Now he is forced to sit and we take the decision away from boy wonders (Tomlin & Arians) to get it wrong.

So many of us had mental visions of something like this happening... At least it happened to the guy I could deal with losing first.

Two weeks to go and two QBs (well, maybe one and a half) still standing/hobbling/shuffling.

Even if he "could" come back earlier, he would be heavily favoring and protecting the injury which eliminates his lone strength - running. He's looked awful in the pocket and isn't Ben scrambling outside of the pocket which I would assume to be the most he could handle with that type of injury.

    Yeah, blessing in disguise.

Now if we just release him, we could have a roster spot for a useful player. We need more depth at o-line.

Well lets hope that Leftwich is ready to go for Sunday...Batch didnt exactly change my opinion that the game has passed him by, although he didnt get much help from Hines and Scott on his two potential TD's. It will be nice to see a pass that is thrown vertically downfield (more than 3 yds).

Either way, if the defense continues playing lights out... it doesnt really matter who's back there.

And so ends the great Dennis Dixon experiment. I think this is good news for the offense, bad news for Dixon. I actually feel bad for the kid. He seems like a good guy, I wonder what the Steelers will do with him.

I wouldn't mind if he came back as the #3 guy next season.

I'm no doctor, however it happened to my son in highschool. If he wants to play again this season I would think it would require repair (not major surgery) and a short rehab. If you do nothing....odds are good he won't be 100% until repaired and would only stand the chance of a more severe injury.

Depending on the 2nd opinion and results and decisions.....DD could be the odd man out on the PUP.
