    Default Steelers guard against dehydration

    Steelers guard against dehydration
    By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Thursday, September 23, 2010

His grandmother introduced it to him while growing up in Florida, and Max Starks swears by it as an elixir for dehydration.

[HIGH-LIGHT]That is why the Steelers left tackle said he plans to have pickle juice on the visiting sidelines Sunday at Raymond James Stadium, where the heat could create problems.

"If you ever get cramps," Starks said, "drinking pickle juice helps alleviate it faster than most other things."[/HIGH-LIGHT]

Conditioning coordinator Garrett Giemont addressed the players during a team meeting Wednesday, and he talked about the need to hydrate, rest and eat properly.

Such reminders are not uncommon at the Steelers' practice facility, but Giemont no doubt had the players' attention after what happened last week against the Tennessee Titans. Playing in hot and humid weather in Nashville the temperature was 87 degrees at kickoff the Steelers battled dehydration as well as the Titans.

Cramping became such a problem among the offensive linemen that the Steelers had to rotate their seven linemen in the second half, particularly after right guard Trai Essex sprained his left ankle.

"We've definitely got to start being smarter about it and hydrating early in the week," said left guard Chris Kemoeatu, who had to sit out a series against the Titans because of cramps. "I didn't take it that serious (last week). I thought heat wasn't going to be a factor, but it definitely was."

It is almost certain that weather will be a factor this week given that the game is in Florida.

And, as in Nashville, the Steelers will be the men in black as the Buccaneers have opted to wear their white home jerseys for the 1 p.m. game.

"I don't know if you can use psychological warfare on a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers," Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris said when asked if making the visitors wear their black jerseys in the Florida weather is a ploy. "You're talking about a mentally tough team. They'll play through the heat."

[HIGH-LIGHT]Kemoeatu said coach Mike Tomlin did not have the Steelers practice in pads yesterday with an eye toward making sure the players are fresh for Sunday.[/HIGH-LIGHT]

"It shouldn't be an issue," Steelers head athletic trainer John Norwig said of dehydration, "but it's going to be hot and humid there, and we may run into some snags."

If they do, Starks said he will be ready with pickle juice something he said was on the sidelines when he played high school football in the Orlando area and then at the University of Florida.

[HIGH-LIGHT]When asked how his teammates react when he talks up the restorative power of pickle juice, which is loaded with electrolytes, Starks laughed.

"They look at me like I'm crazy in general," Starks said.[/HIGH-LIGHT]
"It's one of those things that, 'That's Max. Max would know something like that.' "

Don't know if pickle juice works, but a lot of people down here claim it does.

Back in week 5 2007, the Steelers played the Seahawks in a very untypically hot low 90's and humid early October day in Pittsburgh.

I remember the Seahawks basically built little sun block buildings to keep the linemen out of the sun while not on the field and I remember some fans on the old trib board ripping them for it.

It seemed smart at the time and its something for the Steelers to consider.

Pickle juice contains a **** ton of sodium which replaces what you lose through sweating.

Makes sense. Does it replenish quicker than salt tablets.

I mean in a way that can seem a silly question. The sodium is already soluble in the pickle juice so it would absorb faster in that state, but is there something other than just the amount of sodium in the pickle juice that speeds its uptake to the muscles? Otherwise I would think that a simple salt water solution would be just as effective.

It also contains nutrients and electrolytes.....from the vinegar and the salt....with makes it better than just pure salt tablets. Remember the days of coaches handing out salt tabs? I'm no doc, just what I've heard/read/been told.

The Steelers just did that last Sunday, Had little shade tents for the players.

Either that or Starks and Flozell stood up at the same time.

I remember those days well. Remember a few other concoctions too, but not pickle juice.

They also need to eat a **** load of bananas. Potassium is great for warding of cramps.

Yeah, that was part of one of the concoctions I knew a coach and a few players to use when I was on my high school track team.

They would eat a banana, and drink this slime that consisted of some base liquid (I don't remember if it was lime juice or tea) then they would put honey in it and drop in a bunch of salted peanuts. Shake it up, let it sit for awhile and drink the slime and eat the mushy peanuts.

I get the salt off the peanuts part, maybe the honey to cover that fact that it probably tasted like ****! The rest???????????????????

I was at that game. Man was it hot. I sucked down a pile of beers that day,and I think I sweated them out as fast as I could pour them in.
