Default NL Player of the Week

And he did it with an average higher than his OBP.

    Pedro Alvarez: .417/.400/.833 4 2B 2 HR 13 RBI

At least one hit in all 6 games and an extra base hit in each of the last 5.

I believe this is the first time a Pirate has won any MLB award this year. Last Pirate to win NL Player of the Week was Ryan Doumit destroyed the Nationals more than 2 years ago. I think Doumit only had one other hit the whole week, but in the 3 games against Washington went 9-11 with 4 HRs.

It was a good week for all the Buccos.

Let's hope there are a lot more or them, a lot earlier in the season next year.

That's interesting. I wouod've thought that Andrew Mccutchen had some sort of an award last year, same with Garrett Jones with the way he was crushing the homers..

Pretty impressive week for Pedro however. So far, September has been his best month hitting for Average. It's not been close regarding power and slugging or OBP. His K numbers are at their lowest so far this month and almost cut in half from the month of August

Jones won Rookie of the Month in July with a .310/.361/.700 line and 10 HRs. Never actually got a player of the week award, though. McCutchen didn't win any of them. They don't give weekly rookie or pitcher awards, just "player" of the week that includes everyone.

That's really surprising. I remember Cutch have some weeks during his rookie season that were receiving a lot of hype, figured that he had to win one of those..

Guess it makes the award Pedro received even more impressive. Hopefully this is more about Pedro adjusting to MLB pitching that some over-achievement. It's so tough with the Pirates history to get overly excited about how the team finished a season or individual performances at the end of the season

Alvarez off to a good start if he's looking to repeat. 2-2, 2B, HR. I think hits are weighted less if they come against Kyle Lohse, though.

So this means that the great abundance of offense generated against our Starting Pitching will affect stats negatively in the long run?

Alvarez will ball next season. I mean it...and am calling it now: .285-.300, 35-40 HRs, 110 RBI and a .900 OPS.

The key phrase in Dejan's story is Alvarez talking about the pitching "slowing down".
