    Default Magic Number: 1!

The only way the Pirates don't get the first overall pick is if they go 6-0 and the Mariners go 0-6. Start preparing now. I have them ranked:

    1. Anthony Rendon, 3B, Rice
    2. Gerrit Cole, RHP, UCLA
    3. Matt Purke, LHP, TCU
    4. George Springer, OF, UCONN
    5. Matt Barnes, RHP, UCONN
    6. Sonny Gray, RHP, Vanderbilt
    7. Jackie Bradley Jr., OF, SC
    8. Taylor Jungmann, RHP, Texas

How two of my top 5 ended up in Connecticut I will never understand.

Wow...we have disagreement this early. I dont see how Barnes gets in above Gray or Jungmann...same thing with Bradley.

The Pirates SHOULD...and I think WILL select Anthony Rendon, 3B, Rice...and within about a year the Pirates will have their corner-infielders of the future completely set 3B Rendon and 1B Alvarez.

If healthy, he appears to be the clear cut choice to be the top pick. Hopefully he is not associated with Boras. If so, 2011 will be lost as far as his pro career goes.

Seattle wins! Now the Pirates can go ahead and win out.

It looks like that is how he has them ranked. It's early so I'm sure that list will change several times between now and then.

I don't follow this **** nearly as close to you guys... but, I just hope that whole surgery thing doesn't impact him at all.

Figures to the Pirates luck ... the year we do get the #1 out of the last 3 years, there may not be a CLEAR stud like the last 2. But, like I said, that is just from reading about him needing surgery.

Who is the consensus second best this year (just in case)?

Like in the NFL draft, we should be allowed to start negotiating well in advance of the draft with the top pick. But I don't think MLB allows that. So we'll probably be waiting until the final minutes in August to get a deal done.

Then you are probably going to be disappointed.....I believe he is going to be represented by the Boras group.

I figured he would be. If we go by Alvarez' timeframe, Rendon would be unlikely to reach Pittsburgh before mid season 2013.

Jim Callis on 104.7 this afternoon talking draft.

-2011 is a year where having the second or third pick could still be a #1 talent, but having the first pick is still nice.

-Really deep draft, Rendon, Cole, Purke clear top 3 as of now. Barnes, Gray, Jungmann, Springer could slip in. Daniel Norris in the conversation, but as of now likely won't be taken over the top 3.

-Matt Purke would be a slam dunk #1 pick in most years. Shouldn't even be available in this draft as he agreed on a $6 million bonus with the Rangers, but MLB shot them down since they were funding the team. Lefty, big game experience, 92-95 FB maybe more in there, 3/4 arm angle, hard slider, changeup not MLB ready, strike thrower. Would take Purke over Cole, but it's very close.

-Gerrit Cole is another former first rounder who would have signed with the Yankees if it wasn't for MLB delaying things. Also could go #1 most years. More risky, but bigger upside. Mid-90s FB, great breaking ball but inconsistent. More effort in the delivery. Goes back and forth on Cole vs. Purke, and either is a defensible choice. Similar stuff to Jameson Taillon, but doesn't have the control. Looking at the package he'd take Taillon over the others, but you may favor the college players because of what they have proven.

-Anthony Rendon is a guy he would have taken 1 overall last year, over Bryce Harper. He's a better pure hitter, but doesn't have Harper's power since few do. He has above average power, not quite a Gold Glover, but above average to plus defensively and should stick at third without problem. Some believed he should have been playing SS over Rick Hague, but he wouldn't hang there as a pro. Says NCAA is putting in new bat standards this year, so he believes Rendon won't put up the kind of ridiculous offensive numbers he did the first two years. Says it won't be an injury thing, just offense down around the country. Surgery said to have gone very well, and should be ready to start the season. Believes he's a better hitter than Ryan Zimmerman at this stage in his career and will be a better hitter as pro, though not as good a defender. The comp he'd put on him is Evan Longoria.

-Says Rendon looks like the clear #1, but sometimes these things change. Mark Teixeira was regarded in a similar way, but he went 5th (behind Dewon Brazelton!). Money shouldn't be a big factor in deciding between the top 3.

    Rendon: Boras
    Cole: Boras
Purke: Not Boras, but likely looking to improve on the $6 million he was going to get last time.

-2012 could see a hard slotting system, and teams seem to be assuming it's coming. This may be the last year you can go around spending to your heart's desire, so teams may be more aggressive in later rounds. Shouldn't make much of a difference on the guys at the top of the first round, but will later in the draft, and particularly with high school players.

If the injury is cleared up and the team drafts him, I would love for them to sign him quickly. I would even like to see him play in the Bigs next sept. I don't think sept call-ups start the arb clock. If he pans out and Sanchez does as well the team would have a real strong core by 2013.

What Benny said about "first and third," although it could get reversed.

    Nonetheless, I want that problem!
