    Default Steelers v Pirates

I live out of town but try and get to a Bucs game at least once a year. A buddy of mine invited me to yesterday's Steelers' game. (I saw my last one about 30 years ago at Three Rivers). Holy smokes! I've never seen anything like the entire population of a city motivated and mobilized like the 'Burgh on home game Sunday. I parked downtown and walked across the Clemente Bridge at around 9:30. There were thousands of people tailgating, grilling, swilling, blaring music, throwing footballs--and this was 3 1/2 hours before game time! Virtually every single person was wearing (a probably expensive) Steeler jersey. The mood inside the stadium was like nothing I've ever experienced (and I've seen a fair number of sport franchises play). The point of all of this is that Pittsburgh is such an extraordinary sports town (I mean who would have ever expected 40 years ago that the 'Burgh would go "Ape-s---" over hockey). If the Bucs can turn it around and begin winning and they can even get 10% as much enthusiasm as the Stillers get, I can't help but believe that baseball will thrive in Pittsburgh. I am convinced that we can never go back to the "quick fix" disastrous mentality of the Littlefield era. I am also convinced that we are not doomed simply by being a "small market" team. They must continue with the plan. Draft and trade aggressively and smart. And when the time finally comes to make an FA splash to make a race for a pennant, they must pull the trigger. BN, FC and NH must know what it's like at a Steelers' home game and must wish they can capture at least some of that for the Pirates. God, I love Pittsburgh. Give us finally a baseball team!!!

I was having a discussion the other day with someone in the industry (MLB actually) about expansion contraction and how those play in each sport. One thing that I mentioned in the discussion was that it is simply true that the more history and fire a team has had in the past for its sporting teams should be the biggest indicator of where to expand or who to contract. I used, as an example, the fact that if the Pirates had the Ray's lineup the stadium would have been sold out all year and you would have never heard Longoria questioning the fans. There are some places that professional sports franchises can go to die...and Pittsburgh is CERTAINLY not one of them. The Pirates have a great history for this city...if the Pirates ever get back into the win column...the fans will be there with overwhelming support.

Not so sure.I remember the Buccos couldn't sell out when they played the Braves in the NLCS back in the 90s.

Gonna have to ask you to provide proof on this one.... I was personally at both series', and it was a full house both years... Not sayin' I'm right, but I don't recall the games not being sold-out.

I specifically remember it being an issue back then. The announcers made a HUGE deal of it and said that would never happen to the Steelers.

For the playoffs?!.... I could see it for the regular season, but don't recall it during the playoffs.

... Well, at least someone else is scouring the 'net for facts instead of me....

I didn't realize that the department store was so hated in Pgh....

... Seriously though... Fair enough... I trust you two moreso than my own memory.... Just not Les...

Either way, I remember both series fondly for the most part... Except the endings...
