Tuesday with Tomlin, preparing for life without Aaron Smith

Aaron Smith had surgery Monday to repair a torn tendon in his biceps and will be out indefinitely. That's the bad news.

The good news is that the Steelers are holding out hope Smith will be able to return at some point this season - though Mike Tomlin wouldn't put a timetable on it so the Steelers aren't putting him on IR.

That could change if they get a rash of other injuries. But for the time being, Smith could possibly return.

[HIGH-LIGHT][/HIGH-LIGHT] Tomlin is optimistic about getting Brett Keisel, LaMarr Woodley and Flozell Adams back this week for Sunday night's game at New Orleans.

All will be limited in practice to start the week.

[HIGH-LIGHT][/HIGH-LIGHT] It looks like Trai Essex will be back this week. Though Tomlin wouldn't commit to a starter at right guard, the bet here is that if Essex is healthy, he'll start.

[HIGH-LIGHT][/HIGH-LIGHT] You can hear me on FOX 970-AM every Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. - beginning tonight - for the remainder of this season.

We'll be discussing the previous week's game and upcoming game for the Steelers each week.

Coach Mike Tomlin reiterated that DE Aaron Smith will not be ruled out for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a partially torn triceps muscle.

"He's going to be out for an extended period of time, and at this juncture we're going to wait that out," said Tomlin. "That's our mentality as we sit here today." That stance will be severely tested in the coming weeks if other key players go down with injuries of their own. Rosters spots are precious at this point in the season.

Coach Mike Tomlin is optimistic that OLB LaMarr Woodley (hamstring), DE Brett Keisel (hamstring), and RT Flozell Adams (ankle) will all be healthy enough to play at New Orleans Sunday night.

If Woodley encounters a setback, Tomlin is inclined to move Lawrence Timmons outside and insert Larry Foote in the middle. Keisel's return takes on added importance with Aaron Smith (triceps) potentially out for the season.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams (ankle) is expected to play in Week 8.

Adams' ankle injury Sunday looked pretty bad, so this is a nice surprise for the Steelers. Jonathan Scott will be ready in case Adams experiences a setback.

Steelers DE Brett Keisel (hamstring) is questionable for Week 8.

The Beaver County Times' Mike Bires says it's "likely" the Steelers will be starting Nick Eason and Ziggy Hood at defensive end, which indicates that Keisel probably won't be ready. Aaron Smith is likely done for the season after having triceps surgery.

Steelers DE Aaron Smith had surgery Monday to repair a partially torn triceps muscle.

The Steelers have yet to place him on injured reserve, as coach Mike Tomlin is hopeful that Smith can return late in the year. It doesn't seem likely.

Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that he removed Rashard Mendenhall from the game a few times Sunday for rest purposes.

The Steelers have been talking about lightening Mendy's workload and they followed through on that promise Sunday. Mewelde Moore and Isaac Redman each rotated in the game for a series or two while Mendenhall recorded a season-low 15 carries. In the long run, this will be a good thing for owners. Mendenhall is still a good bet for 20 touches in most games and will find more running room now that Ben Roethlisberger is back.

Steelers RT Flozell Adams sprained his ankle in the second quarter of Sunday's win over the Dolphins and did not return.

Adams' sprain appeared severe. Backup Jonathan Scott is a downgrade in run blocking, perhaps encouraging the Steelers to give Tony Hills a shot.

Steelers OLB LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) said his hamstring was only "tweaked" in Sunday's win over the Dolphins.

Good news for the Steelers as their defense fell off when Woodley and Aaron Smith (triceps) left the game. Woodley said he will "definitely" be a go for next week's game against the Saints. Woodley has 3.5 sacks so far this season after racking up 13.5 a year ago.
