    Default OMINOUS SIGN?

    From Wexell:

    OMINOUS SIGN?

The Steelers are allowing a pass-completion percentage of 66.2 percent, which not only ranks 28th in the league but is on pace to smash the team record of 62.4 percent set in 1991.

In its 78 years in the league, Pittsburgh has allowed 60 percent of opponents’ passes to be completed only four times. The 1991 and 2003 teams had losing records; the 2006 team went 8-8; and the 1987 team went 8-7. These Steelers, of course, are 5-1.

“The thing that’s most exciting is we don’t allow people to score touchdowns,” Tomlin said. “We lead the league in scoring defense. Even in red areas we make people kick field goals. That’s the formula for winning defense. I’m less concerned about what stats may potentially tell us because we all know, in many instances, they lie.”

But the stat that best defines New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees is his league-leading completion percentage of 69.7. He and the Saints are waiting on deck to dive into the Steelers’ secondary.

As for the quarterbacks who’ve compiled the 66.2 completion percentage against the Steelers, they’ve completed 60.2 percent against the rest of their opponents.

Remember back to 2002? Where we opened with losses to the Pats and Raiders and they picked us apart? Boy does this feel reminiscent.

Some of the numbers don't look good but some others:

--We're giving up 6.8 yards per pass lay which is smack dab in the middle of the pack (16th)

--We've given up 4 TD passes which is tied for first.

--We allow opposing QBs a passer rating of 76.6 with is actually in the upper half.

--Our TD/INT ratio is 4 to 8 which is quite good.

Also, if you think our completion % is bad the Pats are worst at allowing 70%

tough to not give up catches when your CB's are 15 yards off the line of scrimmage and your S are on the line of scrimmage 3/4 of the time.

This is one of the things that drives me bonkers. You can't sit back off the pass and wait for it to be comfortably completed before committing to your challenge. If the ball has very little chance of getting to the intended receiver, that complicates matters no end. This is, to mmind, one of the biggest costs of territory this year.

I think some of those numbers are "garbage time" and "let them run out the clock catches."

However, I realize that most is not.

Ergo, our pass rush (with our LBs not the DL) doesn't seem as effective and then you have where the CBs play.

Ben's play will be an equalizer to some of that, but not all.

However, my memory is that the 78 or 79 SB team (Joe Greene's last year) had a pee poor pass rush attack.

I think with Ben being back our defense should improve. Ben should keep our offense on the field longer, score more points and allow our defense more rest. Prior to Ben, the defense really had their backs against the wall.

Carter is the chink in the defense inside our 40 yard line. The D stiffens like glue inside the 20 but is slaughtered from medium range. Bree's is going to humiliate the secondary on Sunday because the line won't get pressure on him. It's going to be a shoot out.

Actually, we are averaging 30:49 TOP so far... That means our defense in on the field less than the opponent's defense...

While I agree with some of this to a small degree, I gotta say that Ben is not the "be all and end all" savior for everything wrong just by returning to the line up. Our pass coverage sucks, and you can not blame it on Ben being gone in any way, shape, form, or fashion...
