The Pitt men's basketball team is ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason men's basketball poll today, giving the Panthers top-5 status in both major polls to start the season.

Pitt earned a No. 4 ranking in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' preseason poll, released last week.

It marks the fifth time overall and third in the past five years that Pitt has begun a season in the top five in the AP poll. The Panthers open play Sunday against Northwood (Fla.) in their first exhibition game at 2 p.m. at Petersen Events Center.

Duke, the defending national champion, starts the year at No. 1 in the AP poll. Michigan State, Kansas State, Ohio State and Pitt round out the top five. Villanova, at No. 6, and Syracuse, at No. 10, also appear in the poll. No. 22 Temple is the only Atlantic 10 Conference team to make the preseason top 25.
