Default Official Free Agent list...Who do you want?

I posted this on another forum. Thought I'd also post it for the tavern, esp since things are kinda slow this time of year.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/0...ee-agents.html

    See anyone you like?

    Few quick thoughts:
I wonder if Nady would want to come back as a platoon 1b/RF? Didn't realize Carlos Pena was 33.
Would Uribe at SS be better than Cedeno?
In the OF, do you take a flyer on Bill Hall, Kearns, Hermida?
Pitching - Bonderman (who I think is Detroit/Seattle only), Harden, Millwood, Penny, Webb, Westbrook or Young?
Relief - Too many to talk about. I feel confident that NH can bring in a few arms, esp from the left side.

On first quick look, I wouldn't mind going after a good rotation guy like Garland ($6.75 mil option) or Chris Young. A flier on Penny wouldn't be the worst thing.

Another intriguing guy is Bedard. He (besides Lee of course) is the only lefty I see on there worth checking out. It's possible, not very likely though, that teams may pass on him since he was seen somewhat of a bust (although he still had good numbers) and was hurt all last year in Seattle and has an option for $8 mil.

I'm not sure what they'll pay, what they can afford and who would be a legitimate option but someone to anchor the top of the staff is numero uno in my book.

Absolutely no need for Nady. He hit below .260 with little power last year. GFJ provides far better value at a younger age than Nady.

I don't see Uribe being much of an improvement over Cedeno at all. Again an older guy, likely costs most that doesn't hit particularly well, has far less power than Cedeno. better defensively since Uribe is a + and Cendeno is a - but I don't know if Uribe makes enough of a difference and definitely reservations on a guy that could make more than $3 million this season.

I'm with Vandy I think Bedard is a pretty nice looking option. Lefty who has put up decent numbers when he's played the past few years. He won't come ridiculously priced but it's not unreasonable to assume that he should make more than a guy he out produces like Paul Maholm ($5.75 million)

the risk with Chris young is that he's not done **** the past 2 seasons and has entered his 30's. The plus is that he was making less than $4 million per season and shoulsdn't be making more now so he could be a reasonably inexpensive low risk guy.

Garland is intriguing but I think he's going to make $5-6+ million per. He was at $4.7 last season and had a good season but it was also one of his better seasons and going forward is jon garland really worth a nice chunk of money? how much does he upgrade us?

Well... there's no Ace's in Free Agency, not any we'd be able to compete to get like (Cliff Lee etc...) Outside of the large market extravaganza that should occur for the couple of Ace types we will be left with a couple in the next tier.

we're going to have to develop and draft our "Aces" but it doesn't mean that we can't improve the pitching staff. A lot of guys out there that could possibly make the staff better. They might not be an Ace but could provide some stuff the staff lacked last season like : Stability, Reliabality and consistency... oh and an ERA under 4

I may be in the minority, but I'd like to see the Pirates do an incentive laden contract with Brandon Webb.

When healthy, he's one of the best pitchers in baseball, and is that "ace" the team is looking for. Health has been his biggest enemy the last two seasons, however he seems to be recovering nicely from it in simulated ball.

I'd also like them to look at Bedard.

I'm not saying sign an "ace" like Lee. That's completely unrealistic. I'm saying someone for the top of our rotation.

I meant what you described in your last sentence.

That sounds like a very bad law firm!

I'm on for Webb because of potential.

I understand Javier Lopez could be had but we would have to give up Alderson!! (Don't want to do that).

Keith Law's scouting reports on the top 50 FA's.

I won't post it all here, but if anyone wants a specific player, let me know.

FWIW, I asked Keith Law a question on those two in the comments section of one of his articles, he's very good at responding. The exchange is here:

    Keith,

Any word on the demand for arms coming off injuries? Guys like Bedard or Webb specifically.

    ----------------

Webb was 80-82 in instructional league. He might just be done. Heard nothing on Bedard.

Maybe Jon Garland....the rest are too old and honestly not that good for what we are planning long term. Pretty ****ty class IMO.
