Default Something I don't understand: When we blitz.....

Ok, now I have a good understanding of the game of football and a basic understanding of the 3-4 defense...

I just can't ever figure why when its a blitzing situation that our corners don't jump the routes. My mind logically says, "Less time to pass = shorter routes" and it seems we can be vulnerable to being picked apart.

It always seems that our corners are at least 8 yards of the ball, no matter what defense is called. I understand, that you don't want to tip your hand by having corners up in press coverage every time a blitz is called, but it always makes me wonder if I am missing a nuisance of the game.

    Any thoughts?

Dick LeBeau doesn't seem to think there is a problem.

    Because our corners suck?

My guess is that our Blitzes are usually accompanied by zone-coverage...which means that we could have any combination of DL, LB, S, or CB handling the underneath zones. If we cheat the CB's to "jump" routes, a double move could easily result in a TD for the bad guys...

However, I hate seeing our CB's play 5yds deep (off of the marker) on 3rd down when we rush only 3!

A big deal was made (Sunday Night) about Ike's openfield tackling, but I usually see him break down and absorb a hit and drag the guy down, rather than attack at the point of a short catch which could result in a loss or short gain....rather than an easy gain of 5-7 based on his "cushion"

As much of a genius that LeBeau is, I still don't understand the 'prevent defense'.

Nobody does... however, in theory, it should work... WHEN YOU ARE WINNING by AT LEAST a 2 posession lead with less than 5 minutes.

Assuming your offense can pick up a couple first downs. What I dont like about the "prevent" is what we saw in the Titans game:

A defense that has been "bringing pain" all day and are playing lights out should never, EVER go back on their heels and allow anything to a team that has done nothing all day! Regardless of the situation...KEEP THE EARS BACK FOR 60 MINUTES!!!

The same thing can be said for an offense... if "said" offense is lighting it up through the air, and the running game is struggling... strategy says "run out the clock," which typically results in 4th quarter comebacks.

I'm a huge fan of sticking with what works regardless of clock-management!!!

But you have to play the percentages... I guess

I've never understood the "prevent defense" in all the years I've been watching football. I understand that it's designed to allow yards in exchange for time. And I understand that it's supposed to "prevent" the quick big play from happening. But, a lot of the time, I see coverage get so soft in these "prevent defenses" that they end up giving up 20 yard passes anyway and the other team ends up scoring in just a couple of minutes. What good does that do? You're just letting the other team back in the game. Here's a crazy thought, why not continue to play the same defense you've been playing all game if it has been successful? Why suddenly get scared that your defense is going to give up a big play if they haven't up to that point? And, like I said, a lot of the time you're giving up fairly big plays anyway with the really soft coverage in the prevent.

Couldnt agree more, but the logic is to keep everything underneath and away from the sidelines to eat up the clock... Kind of counter-intuative if the opposing offense is in no-huddle IMHO!!!

The Bengals, as pathetic as they are, run a pretty darn good "no huddle"... Somethin' to watch this Monday night... Just sayin'....

I know that you are a bit more "tuned into" the Bungles than most... but I think they are gonna get a very concentrated Steelers unit, and should be an easy win... I'm calling 24-10 good guys!

I just hope that we dont spiral out of control after a solid start like last year!!!
