    Default Pirates hire Clint Hurdle

The Pirates have hired Clint Hurdle to fill their managerial opening, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). The deal is for three years, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Hurdle managed the Rockies from April 2002 to May of 2009, before being hired as the Rangers' hitting coach last offseason. During his time in Colorado, Hurdle led the Rockies to a 534-625 record, leading the club to the World Series once, in 2007.

Earlier this month, Pittsburgh narrowed their managerial search to two finalists - Hurdle and internal candidate Jeff Banister. Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that the Pirates had ramped up their efforts to land Hurdle.

With the hiring, Hurdle is of course out of the running for the Mets' managerial opening. In a separate tweet, Heyman suggests that New York's list of finalists includes Terry Collins, Bob Melvin, and perhaps Chip Hale, with Jose Oquendo to be interviewed tomorrow.

ARLINGTON -- The Pirates have hired former Rangers hitting coach Clint Hurdle as their next manager, industry sources said on Sunday.

An official announcement from the club has not been made, but sources confirmed that Hurdle has told the Rangers he is accepting the job in Pittsburgh. He had also interviewed with the Mets for their managerial opening.

Hurdle, who will get a three-year contract, was with the Rangers for one season as their hitting coach. Prior to that, he served as the Rockies' manager from 2002-09, posting a record of 534-625. He led Colorado to the 2007 World Series, which was won by the Red Sox in four games.

Hurdle replaces John Russell, who managed the Pirates for each of the past three seasons. The Pirates were 57-105 in 2010, the worst record in the Major Leagues. They have not had a winning season since 1992.

I like the hiring too......at least it is someone with some ML experience and hopefully some leadership, being less of a "yes man" and more of an aggressive stance with players, opponents, umpires, and yes, ownership........

Benny is going to be ranting once he sees that the Mets are planning to bring in Oquendo for an interview.

As for Hurdle... Can't say that the Pirates went cheap and unknown. In order to "{ramp" something up that means the Pirates had to satisfy Hurdle with an offer that would make him give up on the Mets.

As for Hurdle himself. I like what is said about him and how he teaches and such. I like what he was able to get from the Rangers hitters. Biggest concern of mine is that for most of his Colorado coaching career he produced sub .500 teams. Question is did he get the most out of what he had or not? Don't know personally, never followed the Rockies in any sort of depth.

to me one of the biggest aspects of this hiring is WHO, Hurdle hires for the other coaching spots. Thankfully and hopefully we shouldn't see Tony Beasley anymore! but position coaching, pitching coach, hitting coach... all are very important, VERY important. That right there as a whole is goign to make mroe fo a difference than who the Manager himself is IMO

Hurdle is a "yes man". There's no way that he isn't and that 95% of all coaches arent. No GM wants to hire a coach that won't listen and work with them and not a single one of us fans should ever want a hot head arrogant coach like that either. Unless it's the Best Coach ever and MLB doesn't have one of those. Kipper wants a "yes man" as a coach. a "Yes man" is nothing mroe than someone that is willing to work with the GM's and as a "team" work on building this team back up from *** Status

It'll be nice to see a Manager in the dugout that doesn't look like he's sleeping. Tracy and Russell shared that epersonallity unfortunately to a "T"

I'm more concerned with the Pirates farm system than who the manager is. I'd like to see the Pirates build a solid farm system. I think that is the way the Pirates will get back to winning division titles and winning a World series title.

things still seem to be moving in the right direction. Very happy that they beat the mets out of hurdle. Cant wait for the winter meetings. Gotta say i would have accepted pretty much anyone as long as they keep drafting strong.

I am glad they got who they considered to be "their man" we'll see how it all works out...hopefully for the best.

The development stage isn't complete so we'll see.

The Pirates still have a lot of obstacles to "Hurdle".

    Someone had to say it.
