Nice work by Neal to actually get something in return for the most hittable pitcher in MLB.

Any insight as to why this is for PTBNL?? Why couldn't they just name the player? Could be a salary dump or or a 'B' prospect..??

That could be a decent fit for him. It's a hitters park, but Arizona's a solid team defensively. Not really a particularly poor defender on the team. They're really only hoping he'll be their 4th or 5th best starter, so it's no so bad. He'll likely end up making too much money through the arbitration process, though.

That generally means there was more than one team interested in signing him and the D-Backs felt that had to offer something in trade, otherwise they wouldn’t get him. Regardless, I wish him luck (except when we play them).

I think the player to be named later may depend on whether Az can actually sign Duke for less than $5Mil. If he chooses not to sign, they non-tender him and we get a 3rd string catcher from A ball.

The player should depend on if they can get him signed and how he performs with them...the Pirates will be given a list that they can choose from...or a list that they can't choose from.

My first guess is that they'll be waiting until the Rule 5 draft is completed.

Additionally, according to MLBTR, the DBags may still non-tender him if they can't get him signed to a decent price - so our pbtnl may be contingent on that, as well (as pointed out above).

I think ZD is kind of an odd choice for AZ - it's not like Chase is particularly known as a "pitcher's park."

My thinking is that we'll get a AA (maybe AAA?) catcher for him, as we are thin for org. players at that position.

PTBNL isn't really contingent on anything. According to the Arizona Republic they have agreed on a specific player, but he's unable to be traded until after the Rule 5 and that there is a backup plan if he's taken in the draft. That would seem to indicate he's a player who is Rule 5 eligible. The Diamondbacks don't really have anyone who seems all that likely to be taken.

Just to throw out a guess I would say maybe Wes Roemer could be a guy they'd be interested in. He was taken in the supplemental round back in 2007 and has pretty much just been a mediocre strike throwing innings eater type before struggling at AAA last year. I would expect something like that as a return.

I've seen the Diamondbacks "list," which already has been shared with the Pirates.

    --Loaf of bread

    --quart of milk

    --sack of potatoes

    --dozen oranges

    --two pounds of hamburger

    --four pounds of bananas

BN and NH are considering what to choose.

    I believe Arizona's Rule 5 players are:
    - Roemer
    - Ed Easley, C
    - Mark Hallberg, 2B
    - Evan Frey, OF
    - Josh Ellis, RHP
    - Bryan Henry, RHP
    - Sean Coughlin, 1B
    - Cyle Hankerd, OF

I say no to Frey (he's what we already have), Ellis (not really worth it as a reliever), Henry (same with Ellis), Coughlin (no chance), and Hankerd (no chance).

It would/should come down to Roemer, Easley, and Hallberg. Hallberg would be interesting as his bat isn't great, but its going to be in the 260-270 range and he COULD play SS...his RTZ is a career +5. I would also take Roemer...for Duke? Either would be at least SOMETHING.

Given those choices, I'll bet the Pirates go with the middle IF Hallberg. Middle IF that can actually play SS at the ML level are relatively hard to come by.

Wallberg has dramatically fallen in his prospect status over the past two seasons. Here is an example of how highly regarded he used to be:

"Infielder Mark Hallberg entered the 2009 season as the fourth-best prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, according to Baseball America. The 23-year-old hitter was originally selected by the organization in the ninth round of the 2007 draft. According to Baseball America pre-2009, “Hallberg is an organization favorite because he’s polished and has few holes in his game. He understands his game and carries out a plan everyday…”

That excerpt was taken from a blog entry entitled, "2009 Prospect Duds: Mark Hallberg"

Roemer probably has more of a chance to actually have a ML impact...Hallberg, if he can find it again, would have a chance to have a bigger impact (but less of an overall likelihood).

I'd just as soon keep Duke as any of those or Olsen. Duke is a number 5 starter.
