    Default Happy Thanksgiving, PST Members!

I would like to wish every member of the Pittsburgh Sports Tavern a happy Thanksgiving...

... Enjoy family, food, and football on this holiday... But watch-out if you eat too much turkey, as the triptophan will make you sleepy...

Cheers, folks and a happy Thanksgiving to you all. I'm lucky to have gotten to where I am (philosophically and geographically) and to have made so many great friends via my "new" home town connections.

Have a great day and enjoy.

Turkey and football - that's a hard combination to beat for a day.

This is a pretty good article from a local writer considering Thanksgiving... Take a few minutes and read it...

As for me... Me and the wifey are off over the river and thru the woods to my sister's house in Indianapolis... Enjoy the day, folks...

    Thanksgiving a manly holiday
    By Paul Daugherty • pdaugherty@enquirer.com
    November 24, 2010

Friday, I will resume being Prince Charming. George Clooney meets Ward Cleaver. That’s me, for the Big 364. Thursday is the Other One. Thanksgiving is like no other day. I stretch my chauvinism and give it wing. I do Thursday what I do every Thanksgiving. Which is nothing.

I’m Andy Capp, I’m Ralph Kramden. I’m the King of England, you know?

I’m feeling I should be sorry for that. But I’m really not.

I call it the Thanksgiving Rule. One day a year, I am allowed to be a Hun. I consider it a terminal affront if I have to carve more than a quarter of the turkey. Actually, I consider it a terminal affront if I have to do anything that requires my spine. The work consists of non-competitive log tossing and eating pieces of dead turkey while splayed half-comatose on a couch, booing the Dallas Cowboys.

By the time the Bengals kick off Thursday night, I’ll be in a state of tryptophanic bliss. Which is the appropriate response to our scrappy little 11, yes?

(For the record, in the spirit of the season, my boss excused me from making the trip to the swamps of Jersey Thursday. Nothing says “Thanksgiving!’’ quite like Thursday night at the Newark Airport Marriott. I will make do at home, while praising the existence of a merciful God. Meantime, my colleague Joe Reedy will be camped in that very same Marriott. It’s not like it’s Valley Forge and this is 1777, but if you want to overnight him a can of cranberries, he’d be good with it.)

Thanksgiving is the last man-pig holiday. TV knows this. The NFL knows this. This is why it schedules three games. From noon to midnight, we watch football, dammit. We play Madden during the commercials. TV has wisely extended the Thanksgiving Rule to Friday, when we can watch Auburn and Alabama, the fourth pro game in 24 hours.

This is what we do. This is who we are. It doesn’t matter that three of the teams involved – the Bengals, Dallas and Detroit – have combined for seven wins.

Who in charge could have predicted Dallas-New Orleans would not be a great matchup? Who’d have thought Bengals-Jets would be warmed-over leftovers? Detroit is another matter. The Lions on Thanksgiving are tradition, like inedible aspic and that godawful Jell-O salad. At least they’re playing the Patriots, so we can watch Tom Brady.

This isn’t to suggest women don’t like football. It’s to say most don’t consider it religion. My mother still carries an axe for Thanksgiving 1972, when her elegant dinner was slaughtered by my father and me, sprinting like the jackasses we were, to and from the TV room, to watch slivers of Washington-Dallas. You didn’t mess with my mother’s Thanksgiving.

But realistically speaking, it is why God made TV trays.

Men don’t ask for much. Certainly not as much as we used to. I mean, my mother still makes three squares a day for my dad. And makes the bed and does the laundry. That’s not my life, which is fine.

But a day a year, I need to stretch the pork ribs a little.

We men are admittedly needy, pathetic creatures. But not especially complex. For us it boils down to this: Beer. Food. Football.Remote. Give us that one day a year, we’re lap dogs the rest of the time.

Women have days. Valentine’s Day is a couple’s holiday, but it’s generally the man who catches grief if he forgets it. Anniversaries are the same. Men are far more forgiving when women forget those days, which they never do. Men forget them, they’re mean and evil and unloving. Also, dead meat.

I have friends who are 180 degrees away from this. To them, Thanksgiving is a manly ****ed day. Split the firewood, dunk the turkey in the peanut oil, carve him up with élan and blah, blah, blah. Sorry, I’m not John Smith and this ain’t Jamestown.

Feed me, beer me, leave me to wallow in my absurd manliness.
