Rays Moving Closer To Trading Bartlett

    By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 29, 2010 at 5:40pm CST]
The Rays are moving closer to trading Jason Bartlett, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The reporters’ sources say the Dodgers’ deal with Juan Uribe accelerated trade talks. The Cardinals, Padres, Giants, Orioles and Pirates have all expressed interest in Bartlett, who is arbitration eligible for the third and final time this offseason.

The Rays appear to be looking for bullpen help in any trade involving Bartlett. If they do trade the 31-year-old, they’ll likely replace him with Reid Brignac, who played 50 games at short in 2010 and posted a higher OPS than Bartlett (.692 vs. .675).

Bartlett slumped to .254/.324/.350 in 2010 after an All-Star season in 2009, but his career line (.281/.345/.385) suggests he's capable of more offense. He earned $4MM in 2010 and will likely earn over $5MM through arbitration in 2011.

i would do this in a heartbeat, with a career ops of .731 as opposed to Cedeno's .640. Its an improvement already. I dont know his story in the least, but if he was injured or something last year and can work toward the numbers he had during his all-star year i see no reason not to give this a shot.

According to Dejan, the Rays are seeking a reliever in return.

    Some defensive fun facts:

    2010 Season

Former Pirate Cesar Izturis had a 5.8 UZR/150
    Ronny Cedeno had a -4.0 UZR/150
    Jason Bartlett had a -13.8 UZR/150

The Fangraphs definition is: “The number of runs above or below average a fielder is in both range runs, outfield arm runs, double play runs and error runs combined.”

No idea how that is even remotely useful

It's a stat that is likely overused because there's really nothing else out there to rate defense since Errors and fielding percentage are such a half-stat. UZR is really a pretty inaccurate stat that shoulod be used to give one an idea not a stat that should be used as fact or really a basis for an argument since it's a pretty subjective stat.

With Bartlett what is interesting is that his UZR was good from 2005-2008. In 2005 it was really good. He's just dropped off the past 2 years, mainly last season where something had to be wrong because his fielding plummeted along with his hitting. he's better at both than what his 2010 numbers showed.. So, Bartlett has produced a really positive UZR during his career which is positive especially considering that the player he'd be replacing (Ronny Cedeno) is at best an average UZR player with mental lapses. throw on top of that that Bartlett is a .281 hitter lifetime....

I do want JJ Hardy though...11-13 UZR...plus a bat that could improve (although likely wont hit his 2008 numbers).

Tim at PiratesProspects is wary of Bartlett as well:

    "First, there's his hitting numbers:

    2007: .699 OPS

    2008: .690 OPS

    2009: .879 OPS

    2010: .675 OPS

......Concern number two comes on the defensive side:

    2005: 26.3 UZR/150

    2006: 17.8 UZR/150

    2007: 9.2 UZR/150

    2008: 2.8 UZR/150

    2009: -6.9 UZR/150

    2010: -13.8 UZR/150

...... I would much rather see the Pirates trade for J.J. Hardy, or try and get Ryan Theriot from the Dodgers."

The only way I am trading for Bartlett is if they are also working out a deal for Garza or Shields.

Dude.... this isn't a video game. The trade would likely be for Bartlett straight up. Personally I'd be surprised to see us give up someone like Hanrahan for a 31 year old SS since it would take Hanrahan probably to make this trade but there's no way the Rays who are an extremely extremely stingy team are going to include fantasy dream trade scenerios for you

The question of more importance is "why" has Bartlett's stats fallen the past 2 years at almost a nose dive capacity? Everyone with an internet connection and 2 fingers can see that Bartlett's stats have fallen both Offensively and Defensively... fallen off a cliff but why? If they why isn't substantial then you are talking about a guy that is 2 years removed from Plus-UZR and an excellent bat. Or you could be talking about Aki Iwamura again where the nose dive is continuous and you don't want to waste $4-5 million and a relief pitcher to obtain.

Anybody have any idea or read anything into Bartlett's statistical plunge?

We all want to hit either/or the Powerball and Mega Millions too. Everything that's been mentioned is that Hardy is expected to be tendered by the Twins. So why even mention Hardy? He's not even an option for us.

Realistically in the end, Free Agency is about choosing the player that sucks less than the next player unfortunately It is a fun process up until you see what turd you end up with at least
