Default Brandon Webb and Pirates have mutual interest

Free agent Webb likes Pirates, but can they hook up?
Former Cy Young winner eyes comeback from 2009 shoulder surgery
    Wednesday, December 01, 2010
    By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Brandon Webb, a one-time Cy Young Award winner in Arizona, would welcome a chance to come back from shoulder surgery in Pittsburgh, his agent said Tuesday.

The Pirates are one of roughly a half-dozen suitors through free agency.

"The Pirates are an organization that Brandon and I have a lot of respect for, especially for the GM," agent Jonathan Maurer said, referring to general manager Neal Huntington. "But they're also one of a number of teams that are interested."

Webb, 31, was the Cy Young winner in 2006 and a National League All-Star in 2006-08, posting ERAs of 3.10, 3.01 and 3.30 in that span. But his right shoulder was injured on opening day in 2009, and he had surgery Aug. 3 of that year.

He has not pitched competitively since then, though he had a workout two months ago in front of 18 teams -- including the Pirates -- where he achieved 85 mph on the radar gun with what Maurer called "about 75-80 percent of his usual strength." Webb, a sinker specialist, previously peaked at around 90 mph.

Maurer emphasized that Webb's shoulder, which has been examined by several teams, is healthy enough that he will be ready to pitch at full strength for the start of spring training.

The Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins are among the other suitors.

Another prominent free-agent pitcher coming back from long-term injury is Chris Young, a former standout with the San Diego Padres who originally was drafted by the Pirates.

Huntington was asked Tuesday if he would be open to trying a comeback-type pitcher in his rotation, and he replied, "We are open to a creative addition to the group in competition for our rotation."

NOTES -- The Pirates must decide by midnight Thursday whether to offer tenders to their remaining arbitration-eligible players: Ross Ohlendorf, Joel Hanrahan, Lastings Milledge, Jeff Karstens and Ronny Cedeno. ... Some already have been approached with offers to settle before the deadline. Karstens, maybe the only one on the bubble, is believed to be one.

well the only thing i can add to that is: I cant see any, and i mean any, pitcher they bring in throwing worse than the staff did last year. I would take a chance on anyone we can afford, and atleast one that we cant afford.

I like 'em both, and it's not like Webb is a has been. like Matt Morris was. And speaking of Dave Littlefield, what a stupid idea it was letting Young go. Wouldn't mind giving him a try either.

Gotta agree that, hopefully we can get some of these pitchers into camp on an incentive basis.

Webb is my #1 choice, but then, last year, I wanted Sheets, so.............

But Webb still wants a pretty big contract.

And someone will give it to him.

An incentive laden contract would be the way to go, but it would be moot if someone else offers him more of a standard contract.

The Pirates biggest need is an "ace", and a healthy Brandon Webb fills that role very nicely.

His injuries are to be noted, however what also can be stated is that when healthy, Webb is a bonafide top 10 pitcher, and a guy who really would fit nicely here.

I think if Pittsburgh can get him on an incentive laden, three-four year deal, you jump and quickly.

woah...he hasn't pitched in two years so I am not sure we know what kind of pitcher he is exactly and that's a big reason why you dont sign him for 3-4 years...Thats a huge risk...and the reward for that long of a deal just isn't there.

but we don't get him on a 1 year, incentive-laden contract with an option. Webb would be a gamble for anyone wanting him, for us to get him we'd have to make the stakes even higher.

True, but how high of stakes are too high for an unknown?

I realize that we have to take chances here and there in FA and dumpster dive, but what if we give him money and he busts and that money could have been allocated to a signing bonus for the draft or LA FA?

Right or wrong, fair or not, we have budget constraints to worry about and if I had a choice between Webb and money to sign (insert draftee here) I'd sign the draftee.

Let me ask a question here....who on this board knows definitively the health of Brandon Webb?

edit.....actually I have another question why does vandelay industries have a picture of the Hulk throwing a hairy animal on his posts?

Sign him to an incentive laden contract. If he works out then great ! If the team is out of contention by July 31st and he's pitching great..well..you know the drill....

    That's a bear goddamit.

Or at least a man in a bear suit flailing his arms.

And to answer your query, some things are better left unanswered.

OK...getting back to my original question....the health of Webb’s arm is highly questionable so it is virtually impossible to know if signing him would be a good idea or bad. I have heard rumors that he is throwing his FB in the mid to low 80's if that is true I'd have to pass unless he accepts a minor league deal.
