Default Pirates targeting corner OFs, Cust and Diaz?

    Pirates now targeting corner outfielders
    By Rob Biertempfel, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, December 4, 2010

".....Huntington would like to find a corner outfielder with some pop who hammers left-handed pitching. Two veterans on his radar are Matt Diaz and Jack Cust.

Diaz, 32, was non-tendered by the Atlanta Braves and has one year of arbitration eligibility left. This year, he made $2.55 million and hit .273, but played in just 84 games due to an infected thumb.

In five seasons as a platoon outfielder with the Braves, Diaz hit .305 with an .815 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage). From 2007-09, he hit .369 with a .975 OPS against left-handers.

Cust, 31, was non-tendered by the Oakland A's. This year, he made $2.65 million and hit .272 with 13 homers and had a respectable .395 on-base percentage. A lefty hitter, Cust has a career .722 OPS against southpaws....."

If one of these guys can be had at a Milledge type price for 1 year then OK but both offer 0 long term benefit to the team.....so really what's the point.

I'm not sure Cust actually owns a baseball glove.

What was wrong with Milledge for a Milledge type price. Are any of these guys any better? Did Milledge spit too much? He hit pretty good when he was used to playing, it seems.

They're defintely targeting power from that spot. What is available around the league that would fit that criteria. Diaz and Cust are retreads, so hopefully, something better than that.

Milledge did not provide any power. Running the bases were an adventure for him. He often took a circuitious route to the ball in the outfield. He did, however, hit well with runners on base.

I wasn't totally opposed to Milledge being here, however, his game has major major flaws. There's no question we need more out of that spot then what he brings. Now the question is, can they come up with someone better?

Platoons at 1B and RF are in the Pirate's best interests. Diaz profiles well vs. lefties. I don't think Bowker showed enough but he's a possibility as the lefty complement in RF or possibly Garrett Jones or Doumit?. A platoon of Diaz/Jones should be productive. Or sign Cust and platoon him with Diaz and play Jones/Pearce at 1B?

Forgotten in all of this is that Doumit is very probably going to play RF, if he isn't dealt.** We're certainly not going to pay him $5MM to gather splinters.
GFJ must be platooned - there's no way we can continue to have the (lack of) production he (doesn't) provide(s).
So - we have Pearce, Jones, Bowker, and Edge's replacement for 2 positions. And, Presley is on the 40-man (I'm not saying he's gonna be on the 25-man, but...).

If we sign Cust, I'll be ROYALLY ****ed. He cannot play OF.

**I'm sure NH is going to try to move him, but who knows if he'll be successful?

Doumit didn't play all that bad a right field and showed good arm. Will he hit?

what's your definition of 'hit' in terms of Doumit? he's always been known to have a plus bat for a catcher, but a minus bat for a corner OF/1b.

My guess is we'll play him until we can trade him or until he gets hurt.

the thing is right now, is that there's some semblence of potential for Milledge down the road compared to what is in FA which is old, expensive and not really all that much more of an improvement.

I'll repeat, Free Agency blows but it woulda been nice to see Huntington a little more assertive and forceful. at some point you need to cave into the GM's/Agent's wants and "overpay". They get and udnerstand this in the draft but seem flat out scared and timid any other time. Guess they don't want to get burned for a ton of money and potential broken down production of poor value return but you have to take a chance here and there.

Pretty **** big platoon of players for OF/1B but you're right, it's most likely what we're going to look at. The options in FA aren't really any better.

to be honest I'm concerned with improving the pitching. Not sure we can do that with the garbage out there in the gigantic dumpster known as Free Agency
